I don’t underestimate McCain. He’s got the nerve to have Lieberman as his running mate and make amnesty his first priority when elected.

You can take that extreme position if you wish.

I believe he will make winning the war his first priority and may consider Fred Thompson as his running mate.

"I understand the polls show only 18 percent of the American people support my position. But I have to do what's right, what I believe is right and what my experience and knowledge and background tells me is the right thing to do in order to save this situation in Iraq... In war, my dear friends, there's no such thing as compromise. You either win or you lose." - Sen. John McCain's reaction to the Iraq Study Group Report, 2006

I guess McCains extreme too then:

There’s been plenty of speculation since self-described Democratic-independent Sen. Joe Lieberman started stumping for Sen. John McCain in December that Al Gore’s 2000 runningmate might reprise that role for his Republican friend.

"McCain did little to dissuade Washington Wire of that notion. The Arizona senator was speaking Wednesday evening at town hall-style meeting at T-Bones Steakhouse and Saloon in Lake Wylie, S.C. (Atmosphere: various taxidermied critters on the wall, including a skunk.)

“He’d be a great partner in any endeavor, including joining America together,” McCain said in response to a question on the Lieberman factor. “Let’s reach across the aisle, let’s work together for America. That’s what Joe Lieberman is all about.” "

And go back on his bargain with Huckleberry?? Not likely IMHO. I know that Fred is his old Senate pal and all that, but this is political war at the highest level and old friends have to get out of the way if choosing them would impede the nominee's campaign.

I don't believe that choosing a moderate VP like Huckleberry over a more conservative ally like Fred would represent a move by McNutt toward a somewhat less "moderate" ticket for the November election. But he probably does since Huckleberry will bring a passel of conservative evangelical voters along with him and Fred doesn't have much of anything to bring except the disappointing result of his lethargic campaign.
