Well its not real portable. Batteries and motors big enough, efficient enough and powerful enough to duplicate the performance of gasoline or methanol powered cars are not technologicly or economicly feasible. But going nuke on a massive scale will be required probably to meet the energy demand required for production of methanol in the quantities needed to replace our oil consumption.

Domestic coal has done a fine job replacing oil for electricity generation. Although I certainly do not object to nuclear replacing coal as it is a cleaner technology.

Nuclear is great but does not provide liquid fuel for transportation.

A fuel suitable for central station electrical generation is not the same as a fuel suitable for transportation energy. At this point in time, we have a shortage of one of these, and not the other.
