BCS' snub of Dogs spurs House to call for playoffs Lawmakers take handoff from Adams
ATLANTA - Georgia lawmakers briefly turned aside from issues like the drought, gun control and transportation Friday to voice their displeasure with college football's Bowl Championship Series system.
The state House - a known hangout of some prominent football fans - voted 151-9 Friday to urge the NCAA to create a playoff system for college football, adopting a resolution that calls the current system "dysfunctional." There was no debate.
"The only major sporting event without a playoff system to identify its true champion that I know of is NCAA Division 1 football," said state Rep. Quincy Murphy, D-Augusta.
The University of Georgia was ranked fourth in the BCS entering the last week of the season, behind Missouri, West Virginia and Ohio State. When Missouri and West Virginia lost, Georgia did not rise to second behind Ohio State but dropped to fifth in the BCS. Southeastern Conference champion LSU vaulted from seventh to second.
The Bulldogs went on to rout previously undefeated Hawaii 41-10 in the Sugar Bowl, and there has been growing momentum for a playoff system since Georgia's convincing victory over Hawaii.
UGA President Michael Adams days later proposed an eight-team playoff system to determine the NCAA's national football champion. Adams said the current system is "undercutting the sportsmanship and integrity of the game."
The resolution, which now goes to the Senate, calls the BCS system "the greatest disappointment of the 2007 college football season."
"The only sensible way to determine a national champion in any sport is to develop a playoff system that allows teams to meet on the field," the resolution reads. "The fans of college football deserve a true national champion to be crowned after winning the title on the field of play and not in a popularity poll."
House lawmakers had expected the resolution would inspire more discussion.
"When you think about the economic impact of collegiate sports, we're talking about multimillion dollars," said state Rep. Joe Wilkinson, a Sandy Springs Republican.
So would a die-hard Georgia Tech fan vote on the proposition as well?
"I think it's something that needs to be done," said state Rep. Tommy Benton, R-Jefferson, who attended the University of West Georgia but proudly wears a sticker of Tech's mascot on his name tag.
Benton paused, perhaps recalling Tech's 40-28 loss to Fresno State in the Humanitarian Bowl.
"And someday, I hope we'll be able to say we deserve to play for the national championship."
A playoff is desirable, but this is a waste of the people of Georgia’s time. Their representatives aren’t there to dabble in football.
“good for georgiathe bcs is an adomination”
Yeah, but Georgia is whining here. LSU’s two losses were slim. Georgia absolutely got their asses handed to them by a mediocre Tennessee team. Spanking a WAC team doesn’t make you national championships.
Better to have loved and lost than to never love at all.
I think letting Tiny Troy put up 34 points on them near the end of the season hurt Georgia’s ranking a lot.
I have absolutely no doubt Georgia would have given LSU a game. Can you show me a team on the very last week that was ranked number two that WON and fell 3 spots?
I rest my case.
The BCS is BS!
Ohio State never played anyone in the top TWENTY during the regular season...in addition they played Youngstown St. and the Akron ZIPS?
What IS a zip anyway?
Had Ohio State been in the SEC they’d have been fortunate to get to .500 simple as that.
Ahhh, but Georgia’s been there and done that!
I guess I can see how the Ohio States of the world would like the BCS...if it went to a playoff they’d routinely bow out in the first round! LOL
btw...the dawgs finished higher than Ohio State.
Dawgs dropped to fifth the last week, didn’t they? It was LSU #1 and OSU #2.
You can't seem to get your facts right. Purdue was ranked 20 when OSU played them. Michigan was 23.
Yeah, that’s what I’m saying...up to that very last weekend the BCS was all over the map and didn’t know WHAT to do! Georgia was number 2 and I can’t remember if it was Kansas, WVU or Missouri that was number one, but they lost and Georgia WON and STILL Dropped some THREE spots!
Yes...#20. Nothing higher. I meant to say above the top 20, not in the top 20...but that’s the entire point!
Meanwhile Georgia ROUTINELY played top 10 teams periodically all season long!
Not at all...remember they were ranked #2. Then they won, and then they dropped to #5.
What hurt them was losing two games, one in a blow out loss to Tenn. And even with that they got as high as #2, and won and yet dropped 3 spots!
The point is the BCS is a screwed up system. This year proved it beyond any shadow of doubt. It was bad enough when Auburn got shut out some years back and went undefeated!
Fill me in with the details, please. This is what I remember:
Georgia beat #5 LSU in the Home Opener, then beat #1 Florida, then upset #9 Tennessee
I beleive SC was in the top 5 when we lost to the gamecocks.
We didn’t play LSU.
We beat a #5 ranked Hawaii. I think they were #5? God doesn’t it seem like years ago already?
Well Georgia played Troy but I’d be willing to bet Troy could take a zip ANYDAY! LOL
Georgia does play LSU on Oct 25 of 2008 in Baton Rouge.
Sounds good. Can’t wait for football season! LOL
Georgia not only wasn’t the SEC Champion, they did’t even win the East division of the SEC and therefore weren’t eligible to play in the SEC Championship game. Win their division and then the SEC Championship, only then will Georgia fans have a valid argument.
