It was thought that John McCain might have trouble in Florida, a state where only registered Republicans can vote. But he beat Mitt Romney by a not inconsequential margin, and Romney must be kicking himself for withdrawing from the South Carolina battlefield early when he might have derailed the so-called "straight-talk express."
It is said that since the Reagan era, every winner of the South Carolina primary has gone on to win the GOP nomination. Unfortunately, McCain is no Reagan.
He is now advancing on the strength of two main issues — his status as a genuine war hero who was right on Iraq, and the fact that surveys say he is the only Republican candidate who can beat Hillary Clinton.
We're certainly no fans of Hillary, and electability is an important factor in choosing a nominee. But more important is who should be elected.
On most issues (defense and abortion are two big exceptions) McCain is indistinguishable from Hillary, and — if elected — he's likely to face a Democratic Congress ready to agree with him.
We are concerned — and we think the GOP base should be too — about the ringing endorsement given to McCain by the New York Times. It praised him for "a record of working across the aisle to develop sound bipartisan legislation."
What the Times had in mind is legislation such as the assault on the First Amendment known as McCain-Feingold. That campaign finance law ironically makes it illegal for American citizens to run ads praising either Mr. McCain or Mr. Feingold within a specified time before a primary or general election.

John McCain needs to make overtures to conservatives, no doubt about it.
He has gone across the aisle.

The reality is going to be if the GOP gives Mcpainintheass the nomination conservatives will sit this election out in droves. That means the dems will win the WH. What I’m not quite sure of however is whether or not the dems will elect Hillary. Believe it or not, the dems dislike her as much or even more than the repubs.
Overtures? You mean down right lies? This Conservative will not vote for that interloper no mater what "overture" he tries to feeds us.

If you had a chance to see McCain tonight on stage, he's totally enamered with himself. His posture and expressions showcased his attitude. One of gloating and condescention, the only overture he'll make is along the lines of "Vote for me or your stupid."
He simply doesn't give a damn about you , me or America, this is his moment don't get in his way.
He's dangerous.
A strong conservative running mate and a commitment on Supreme Court judges would help McCain immensely.
I’m not happy with the way this is turning out and John McCain was not my first choce. But while McCain can be a pain in the behind and his views on border security and energy development/independence are deplorable, his record taken in its entirety isn’t that bad. He’s good on life issues, the second amendment, and foreign policy.

It will be interesting to see who he chooses as a running mate. (assuming he gets the nomination)
Will he pick someone to please conservatives? Or will he pick someone to please the media and the middle?
