Re: However, there is enough anger at both the existing major parties that a third party candidate may have a chance of launching a viable third party challenge. If the two candidates are Sen’s Clinton and McCain, their similarities will work against them.

A viable “conservative” third party would give the GOP some badly needed competition and would be a pretty nice consolation prize for this lemon of an election.

Sorry, but this song has been played way too many times for me from Strom Thurmond's Dixiecrats to George Wallace's American Independent Party just to name two during my lifetime.

The last 3rd party to work was the Republicans in 1856. We need to get us Conservatives back in control of it, but electing Billary or Obama and giving them 4 years to allow us to be nuked is not the right path to my way of thinking!

Perot may have actually won the first time around had he not dropped out and back in. I think he was surprised, and frightened by the idea that he might actually have to be the president, which, IMO, he never really intended.

It can be done, but the circumstances have to be just right. If McCain wins the GOP nomination and Bloomberg jumps in, further splitting the liberal vote among Hillary, McCain and himself, a conservative third (or fourth) party could be viable.

“The last 3rd party to work was the Republicans in 1856.”

Yup. And they rose to power after the Whigs imploded. A situation not unlike what is happening in the GOP right now. Complete with Sen. McCain in his new role as Winfield Scott.

I agree in part. I don’t like what I see on the Democrat side, but I don’t see a conservative or even a Republican for that matter winning the election. I’m for taking what small amount of lemonade we can out of a lemon of an election. A viable conservative third party would be a nice consolation prize.
