McCain beats Romney in Florida GOP race

MIAMI - Sen. John McCain won a breakthrough triumph in the Florida Republican primary Tuesday night, edging past former Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney and seizing precious campaign momentum for next week's string of contests across 21 states.

"It shows one thing: I'm the conservative leader who can unite the party," the Arizona senator said in a brief interview with The Associated Press. "It's a very significant boost, but I think we've got a tough week ahead and a lot of states to come."

The victory was worth 57 national convention delegates for McCain, a winner-take-all's haul and the largest single prize to date in the race.

Rudy Giuliani was in third place, his best showing of the campaign but possibly not good enough to warrant continuing.

Former Arkansas Gov. Mike Huckabee trailed but told supporters he would forge on.

"...This country is doomed. Hispanics are already the majority in California..."

Could overturn Roe v Wade.

Just sayin'.

You are *completely clueless* a cuban *cant* be illegal, the minute they set foot on American soil they are granted legal immigration status. Cubans tend to one of the more reliable group of republican voters in fla so dont crap on them because they dont buy mitts 11th hour conversion to social conservatism.”

You’re right about Cuban-Americans, but I think the MSM is misreporting McCain’s strong showing among Hispanics. In one of Fox’s exit polls asking why voters voted for particular candidates, most Cuban-Americans said because McCain had fought communism and had been a POW. No mention of immigration policy.

Not sure, but I think they said that Cubans and other Hispanic illegals and legals are about 50/50 of total Hispanics in Florida. So, half or more of McCain’s Hispanic vote was not due to immigration issues.

I don’t expect the MSM to highlight this since they prefer to say he was rewarded for supporting amnesty for illegals, and that any who opposed it hurt the Republican party.

We Republicans/Conservatives justly deserve the title of being “The Stupid Party”. The Democrats are the evil party. I cannot for the life of me understand how anybody can support the backstabbing McCain. What’s the appeal. He is wrong on almost all the issues. None of my friends or family members support McCain. They are on to this phony. He is wrong about taxes, immigration, the environment (be bought into this bs cap and trade carbon credit fraud), not to mention McCain Feingold and the fact he is friends with Ted Kennedy. So if any of you out there are McCain supporters or have friends who are, tell me the appeal. I’m extremely frustrated and angry with the McCain people. I’d like to slap them upside their heads, but what can I do?

You know, I am pretty much disgusted with how far this country is moving away from the ideals of the founding fathers.

The choices for republican nominees have been mostly reprehensible. the democrats are WORSE but they are democrats and it is to be expected for them to be PC mumbling idiots.

I sometimes am tempted to say that if mccain is the nominee (as opposed to romney) I too will join the ranks of disgusted freepers writing in ‘fred thompson’ on my ballot. Enough is enough.

and yet, how valuable would it be to fight for a mccain presidency instead of obummer or the hitler woman? hard to say!

I hate it when people say that america’s goose will be cooked in 20 years but sometimes it sure does look like people are being idiots politically. ASKING for it.

Please see the Mark R. Levin article on McCain in the National review online. Jan 17,2008.

just hi-light and paste to your url address. it is quite eye opening. Besides John McCain is to old looking and could not beat Hilary or Obama. Even Dick Morris is saying now he might not win now.

Morris just said Monday night that McCain was the only Republican candidate who could win the general election. He speciffically said Mitt has no chance.

John McCain built a lot of clout in 2000 at the National Congress of American Indians conference in Palm Springs; money will not be a campaign issue for him. Then again, the tribes also support Hillary, but they’d likely side with McCain if they went head to head, mostly due to Bill’s actions in and out of the White House.

Thanks for the vote for a true conservative.

Even many of the Republicans in this country seem intent on slitting their own throats.

McCain is a globalist. He is not concerned about the sovereignty of the USA.

But hey, if the current pres is so intent on selling out to amnesty and open boarders, the sheeple in the GOP will follow him right off the edge of that cliff, so to them, a vote for McCain is no big deal.

And as the rest of the world watches, the Iranians rub their hands in gleeful anticipation. I wonder how long it will be till they try to nuke us.

I’m glad I have Heaven to look forward to, thanks to Jesus. This country is toast.

Thanks for the vote for the true conservative? That was a vote for John McCain, not Fred Thompson. Thompson quit, remember?

I can’t believe that some people would rather vote for a lost cause than prevent a disaster.

there are hundreds of thousands of illegal alien Cubans in Florida

No, there aren't.

Since the 90's the policy has been Cubans who reach U.S. soil are granted refuge under the "wet feet, dry feet policy". If their feet touch dry ground, they're granted asylum ... so, unless these hundreds of thousands are living in the surf off of Miami, they don't exist

I’m starting to think like you do. Better to have a Dem in the WH and have a strong R Congress, or we’re going down the tubes with a R like McCain in the WH. The less they do up there in Washington, the better off our country is. GRIDLOCK, THE WAY TO GO.

Neither H or O will stop the WOT once we start getting hit again by the Islamos. They just say shit to get elected, but I think both know the score and what it takes to survive as a nation. In that regard, as much as I hate to say it, becoming Prez makes one look at that sort of thing a might differently, especially when Americans are dying. Especially here on our own soil. And, we will be hit again, that is for certain I am so sure, whether or not we end up having a D or R as Prez. That is a fact we all need to come to grips with. And that my friends is something that can focus our attention pretty rapidly, at least that’s my prayer.

But as for the other issues, I agree, we are better having a strong opposition in Congress than having someone rubber stamp a liberal Congress and have everything we love destroyed. America tends to elect the opposite party for Congress and the WH

I think a lot of people will be echoing this conclusion from RedState’s Erick Erickson:

Tonight was not a failure of conservatism, but a triumph of military voters who have made their home in the Republican Party because we are the party of a strong national defense.

In both South Carolina and Florida, they won it for McCain. In the grand coalition of the GOP, we’ve talked about social conservatives and fiscal conservatives. We’ve all ignored the military voters, except John McCain. And he won them big. His message resonated.

Romney may have all the money in the world to continue in the race for the nomination, but although it’s kept him “in the race”, it’s not given him a victory in IA, NH, and FL, even though he has spent millions already. It’s obvious that it’s going to take more than just money for Romney to come out on top.

Careful manc, AM doesn’t like you pointing out those obvious anomalies in Floridian voters who fell for McCain.

Exit polls clearly show what you, jerry557, and I stated to be so according to more than 1500 poll participants (although ours’ is worded a bit less pc), but it isn’t welcomed here.

McCain voted against - yes, against - barring gang members and even terrorists from the US. Scary to have him with his leftist record and amnesty obessession - along with his mental issues - make it to the White House. He is not qualified to be POTUS.
