MIAMI - Sen. John McCain won a breakthrough triumph in the Florida Republican primary Tuesday night, edging past former Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney and seizing precious campaign momentum for next week's string of contests across 21 states.
"It shows one thing: I'm the conservative leader who can unite the party," the Arizona senator said in a brief interview with The Associated Press. "It's a very significant boost, but I think we've got a tough week ahead and a lot of states to come."
The victory was worth 57 national convention delegates for McCain, a winner-take-all's haul and the largest single prize to date in the race.
Rudy Giuliani was in third place, his best showing of the campaign but possibly not good enough to warrant continuing.
Former Arkansas Gov. Mike Huckabee trailed but told supporters he would forge on.
Nor do I. But it appears much more of that is in both of our futures.
Your original calculation was closer.
Right. And it is our’s so it is worth fighting to the finish.
This election is about the 4 to 5 supremes who will step down. So this election is about DECADES not 4 or 8 years.
Everyone forgets that.
Divide and Conquer.
Republicans are being played by the MSM, including Fox News.
Our conservative candidates have been picked off, one by one. Once Fred was out, they knew they had us.
McCain is being portrayed as the only one who can stop Hillary. But, no other candidate divides the Republican Party more than McCain.
Just enough Republican voters have been convinced that McCain is the only electable candidate. The out of touch Republican establishment believes it as well. They think we have to move to the left to win. Too many cocktail parties with the enemy, if you ask me.
Very few Republican voters can really know John McCain’s record and vote for him. He is a figment of the MSM’s imagination. However, if he does win the nomination, the MSM turn on him like a rabid dog.
I heard Mitt Romney’s speech tonight. He is trying to rally the base. I have not been a fan of Romney. If there is to be any hope for sanity in November, conservatives need to rally around Romney.
Fred Thompson, who has had much financial support from me and other conservatives, need to put his mouth where our money is and endorse Romney. In kind, Romney needs to tap him for VP.
We need to call our congresscritters and ask them to support Romney. Most of them have been stabbed in the back by McCain...they need to hear from the people who vote and financially support them. Roy Blunt is getting a call tomorrow; Kit Bond was for Rudy, no he can be for Romney.
John McCain cannot win in November. We are being set up by the Democrats and the Media. We’d better get our act together now.
From the Florida Department of State website.
Is Florida a closed primary state?
Yes, Florida is a closed primary state. Only voters who are registered members of the two major political parties (Republicans and Democrats) may vote for their respective party’s candidates in a primary election. However, if all candidates for an office have the same party affiliation and the winner will have no opposition in the general election, all qualified voters, regardless of party affiliation, may vote in the primary election for that office. At general elections, all voters receive the same ballot and may vote for any candidate or question on the ballot. If there are write-in candidates, a space will be left on the ballot where a write-in candidate’s name may be written.
For example, the Constitution Party National Nominating Convention is in April as I understand it. Somebody well-known, solid, Conservative nation-level leader without baggage and not a minor party nut case whom nobody knows, should go for it. I would get behind such a movement, in view of having the only choice of Democrat (D) and Democrat (R) in the General Election.
We’ll see how it plays out next Tues but I think it will just confirm what I’ve said here.
He only won by 5 percent
Huckabee is a problem. He costing Romney votes now. McCain won’t get those votes.
McCain uses the “F” word more than Chef Ramsey.
What a mess. Fred was the only one who could unite the party. But, we had blinders on and listened to the MSM.
We could all just move there and take it over. I'm game. I miss San Diego like crazy anyway.
And of course the fact McCain flat out lied bout Romney’s Iraq plan..Cant forget that one
We’re doomed.
I would, too. I can't vote for any of the remaining GOP candidates. So, I will gladly vote third-party if there is an acceptable candidate; I will write in Thompson if there is not.
McPain got extremely dirty in Florida . His name was on the ads. I’m not a big fan of Romney , but McPain flat out ran decietful ads ....McShameful
I totally agree with you,Huckabee is the main one to blame for this huge mess.He was McCains little puppet.
What irritates me the most is that Romney had to fight McCain all on his own. Guilianni, Huckabee, and even Thompson were all to afraid to attack McCain. This was probably the reason he was able to get to where he is now, by using them.
What makes you so sure that Huckabee's supporters belong to Romney? After ST, Huckabee will have more delegates than Romney. The Red State South will not accept the gun grabbing carpetbagger from Gay Marriagchusetts. Not that it matters. I think we are doomed in the general no matter who gets the nomination. If Huckabee accepts the VP for either McCain or Romney, I will offer my apologies for being fooled, right here on FR. 99% of his support is not about him, believe me.

For a third party candidate!!
That would be the plan. Move in. Take over. Kill off the socialist programs. No income tax. No (unnecessary)social welfare. etc. Within twenty years California would be the leading economic power in the world.
