The walther is a fine pistol, but the Makarov is more powerful and simpler in design.

The Hungarian and polish Maks are actually closer to the PPK in design than to a true makarov. parts are actually interchangeable

Walther PPks are .380 (9x17mm) Makarov is 9x18mm and the 9 part is actually something like 9.36mm in diameter it is visibly fatter
