The real conservative Republican?
San Francisco Chronicle ^ | 1/22/8 | Debra J. Saunders

Posted on 01/22/2008 7:51:46 AM PST by SmithL

Former Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney likes to tell Republican voters that he is the true conservative because, unlike Sen. John McCain, he has not been "part of the Washington scene for a quarter of a century."

Yes, McCain has been in Congress since first elected in 1982, but he never succumbed to the Beltway Culture of Spending, whereas Romney fell into Washington's big spending trap somewhere between Michigan and Florida.

As Romney courted the Michigan vote, he proposed a $20 billion energy research/auto industry bailout plan likely to appeal to the Motor City state. Later, touting himself as the turnaround guy for a flailing economy, Romney released his own $233 billion stimulus package - a price tag that dwarfs President Bush's $145 billion proposal.

In the package, Romney cooked up a pricey way to court Florida's powerful senior vote: He proposed a permanent elimination of payroll taxes on seniors. And he opposed "any increase in Social Security taxes."

The man who says he is not a creature of Washington presented no spending cuts in the stimulus package. Romney spokesperson Sarah Pompei said that the price tag is big because it needs to be "large enough and immediate enough to have an impact to help turn around the economy." And while there are no specific spending cuts, in general Romney wants "to cut wasteful spending in Washington." Forget that without spending cuts, Plan Romney can only further expand the federal budget deficit.

We've seen that movie before. It's called Politics as Usual.

There isn’t a dimes worth the difference between Rudy McRomney nor is there a dimes worth the difference between Hillary OBamaha....

I am very surprised at the people of this country....they yell they want change, yet look who is ahead in the polls....

Why vote for the same old people, if you want change, then vote for a Duncan Hunter, or someone new, with new ideas, new blood, new life, why vote for the same old run down, tired, worn out has beens?

I don’t want the same old same old, I want someone new, but yet people are afraid to take a chance....folks, this country was made on chances, so why not take one?

When the San Francisco Chronicle supports Mccain like this it only tells us how anti-conservative Mccain is.
It also shows u that the far left is scared of Romney.

What do you mean? Romney is now a Conservative (because he tells us so) who just happens to want a bigger government?

If McCain is not the definition of a Washington DC insider then who can qualify? McCain opposed tax cuts, supported amnesty-like proposals and has done NOTHING to help secure the southern borders. Mac may be back but no thanks.

I hear ya!

I Fred pulls out Mitt gets my vote.

I want to see Coroprations get incentives so they’ll hire more folks and see people working their tush off get tax relief. Spending cuts will happen under Mitt. This “hit piece” confims that Mitt is doing what a Republican should be doing.

Maybe you didn’t hear?

Duncan Hunter withdrew.

He’s no longer running.

So, we need to look at the next best candidate.

A real conservative Republican wouldn’t have supported AWB in 1994 and would flat out declare AWB2 to be DOA if he’s president. Romney would undoubtedly sign it into law. Ergo, he’s no real conservative, period. End of story.

Like the incessant bashing of Huckabee sends smoke signals that the status quo is scared [bleepless] of this guy, and why is that? Hmmm??

Why is that u ask?

Because a bible thumping simpleton that eats fried squirrel meat with a spork and a smiling snort will never win a general election.
Besides, he’s a taxing maniac that wants illegals to go to college on the tax payers dime. The list goes on and on with Huckleberry.

It was the best of times. It was the worst of times. It was the best of times for the Republican Party as they were poised to receive the largest percentage of the popular vote that they had received in years. It was the worst of times for the conservatives within that party as the influx of anti-HC/BO Democrat votes diluted the worth of their own and gave the country-club crowd what they had prayed for since Reagan had polluted their party with those despicable “values voters”.

What was a party to do? None of their candidates could attract the votes from both these groups but if enough Democrats voted against their party’s candidate then they could win without those “values voters”. Oh how sweet that win would be. They knew in their heart of hearts that the Democrat votes would not be theirs in the next election and the “values voters” would be gone also.

But then, life was much better when they were the perennial minority party. As the minority party, nobody expected anything from them and they could get the earmarks that ensured their reelection without any of the headaches. The could once again return to the genteel life that they had enjoyed before that damned Reagan and that damned Gingrich had messed everything up.

But, across the ocean there were those that regarded our country with envious eyes. Slowly and surely they made their plans against us.

Romney is a big government liberal, super-rich, elitist, who doesn’t understand the first thing about leading a nation like the USA. What Romney proposes will perpetuate a rotten socialist system. Romney is a political chameleon and can’t be trusted.

As Romney courted the Michigan vote, he proposed a $20 billion energy research/auto industry bailout plan likely to appeal to the Motor City state.

Romney went to Florida and endorsed another socialist bailout, this time a national catastrophe fund so the rest of the US can pay for Florida's hurricanes. McCain is the only candidate to oppose it (probably Paul too).

There's also not a dime's worth of difference between RomneyCare and HillaryCare. They both want universal mandated health care run by private companies. Apparently it's supposed to seem less socialist that way.

Perhaps because Huckleberry Hound is a tax-raising theocrat who took his how-to-be-a-demagoguing-populist lessons from Huey P. Long?

Fortunately you have nothing to worry about. I haven't seen a shred of evidence that he can win... and plenty that he will lose bigtime.
