Mexican federal agents escorted Marcos Estrada Delgado in Mexico City. The U.S. man was among four police officers and seven civilians accused of working for Mexico's powerful drug cartel.
Mexican military efforts to crush heavily armed drug-smuggling operations in five cities along the U.S.-Mexico border pose a "grave threat" to U.S. authorities and a half-million Americans in the area, according to former U.S. Border Patrol and Immigration and Naturalization Service officials.
"What we face is more of a challenge than law enforcement can be expected to cope with," said Kent Lundgren, chairman of the 800-member National Association of Former Border Patrol Officers (NAFBPO). "The best solution is for the U.S. military to assume armed positions along the border ... and use whatever force is necessary to control the border zone."
On Jan. 12, Mexican Brig. Gen. Rigoberto Garcia Cortez said the Mexican military and other personnel had surrounded five border cities in the lower Rio Grande Valley Matamoros, Reynosa, Rio Bravo, Miguel Aleman and Nuevo Laredo in response to gunfights between Mexican police, military forces and heavily armed drug smugglers.

John McCain’s answer to this would be to give the border states back to Mexico and be done with it.

I fully endorse this statement, and recommend trained snipers.
OR we just annex Mexico and be done with it.
“OR we just annex Mexico and be done with it.”
Its more likely that our politicians will hand over large chunks of America.
We need the FENCE.
The most effective fence you can build is the one constructed in their minds. Use of snipers does that.
We need the fence. Double fence, barbed wire on top, electronically monitored, two-lane high-speed roadway running between the two fences for fast access by Border Patrol vehicles. Such a fence will work. Maybe not 100% (there will still be tunnels) but 95% or more.
Obviously a near-trebling in the attacks on BP over two years is not enough to draw the attention of the ditherers George Bush or Michael Chertoff. Makes one wonder what inspires their inexcusable failure to protect federal law enforcement personnel at the border. Money? Or simply treason?
In any case I'm sure McCrazy will have a plan.... something like "no Border Patrol agents within 50 miles of the border."
Kent, if you're still hanging around here on FR, you can be sure that we all applaud your continuing efforts and service on behalf of your colleagues and the nation. It's VERY important that you guys keep up the pressure and continue to inform the public about the nightmares at the border.
Use our military to OUR borders? That’s crazy talk!
Or make it illegal for Border Patrol personnel to operate within 50 miles of the border, in order to keep them out of harm's way. Along with legalizing use of the matricula consulara, these measures will form the cornerstone of Comprehensive Immigration Reform..
Flame suit on...
What a wonderful idea. Instead of providing welfare for 24 million illegal immigrants the beleaguered taxpayers will provide welfare for the remaining 108 million who haven't yet crossed the border illegally. In addition we'd get the corrupt Mexican bureaucracy including their government thugs (also knows as police) to shake down even more people. The could teach even the New Orleans police how to extract more money from the populace.
Amen! I can only add that the first row of fence should be "cold" and the second "hot", charged with about 7-10,000 volts, iow, a little hotter than an electric fence you would use to keep livestock in, but not lethal, all backed up by a "high velocity lead fence" i.e, snipers, just in case. If you get past the #2 fence row, it should be assumed that your intentions are hostile.
Since I think it's inevitable that we will be fighting a desert war (again), what better place for our troops to train?
I really wonder how much longer our President is going to allow our border patrol and local law enforcement to be fired on by Mexican nationals (drug and people smugglers as well as Mexican Army) inside the USA......Mexico is not our friend by a long shot.....
