Sen. John McCain won Saturday's South Carolina Republican presidential primary, AP projects.
Fox News and NBC News exit polls ranked the economy as the top concern among South Carolina primary voters, followed by illegal immigration, the war in Iraq, and terrorism.
Columnist and Weekly Standard Editor William Kristol commenting on Saturday's results on the Fox News Channel said that the Republican field is now winnowing down to just three viable candidates: McCain, Mitt Romney, and Rudy Giuliani.
One can make the argument that he is MORE conservative than Bush or Dole only if one doesn’t understand what conservative means. Here in America, a conservative is someone who wants to expand our liberty and protect it from enemies both foreign and domestic. It is not someone who wants comprehensively to regulate political speech, to import Mexico’s corrupt and authoritarian political culture one voter at a time, and to fetter the executive branch with absurd legal strictures as it tries to gather the intelligence we need to deal with an existential threat.
McCain is a dangerous fool, a vain, strutting twit, and probably senile to boot. Even Hillary has less potential to do damage. Romney and Giuliani, appalling as they both are, would be better than McCain. If McCain is the best the Republicans can do, count me out.
Well, personally, I am sick of the main stream media choosing our candidate and voters who are too stupid to know what the candidate they vote for really stands for... in addition I am sick of Iowa, New Hampshire and South Carolina deciding for the entire freaking country..... how about having Super Tuesday period ...... and let the chips fall where they may with a cross section of the entire country!!!!
David Gregory pointed out on MSNBC that McCain plagiarized George Bush in his speech, he said he has covered Bush long enough he knows his speech’s and colloquialisms so well he can spot them in a second and McCain was channeling Bush tonight to try and fool people like us...

Common Sense Conservatism prevails
CONGRATS JOHN!
Independents and cross overs from the democratic party in places like Michigan. they have been open primaries — did yo know in New Hampshire you can appear the day of the election, say you “plan” to move there and register to vote on the spot? the KOS kids were telling democrats to vote for Romney since they couldn’t vote for a democrat in Michigan so many did vote for Romney or Huckabee or McCain to screw with us.
Well, at least it’s been & likely will continue to be interesting. Too bad so much is at stake!
It’s likely I can vote for just about any of our candidates, with the exception of Huck. My husband is freaking out & insists he couldn’t vote for “liberal McCain”, but I’ll help him fill out his ballot. McCain could really help himself, if the nominee, with a good Veep candidate. Rudy leaves me scratching my head— I don’t know enough about his advisors, but I have been seeing many Rudy commercials here in Seattle, so I can’t help but think they have some greater strategy in place. He may be many things, but dumb doesn’t strike me as one of them.
Interesting to say the least.
I think all states should have their primary on one day. This will cut back on the mud-slinging and the rhetoric somewhat b/c the election cycle will be shorter.
Also, the MSM won’t be able to pimp their favs. Why should a few states determine the choices for the rest of the country?
Sounds like that demographic group is not only the most conservative but probably the most civic minded.
Since Romney skunked mcCain in mcCain's neighboring state I wonder how Romney will do in Arizona.
Anyone who thinks that Hillary or Obama would be a better choice than McCain is an absolute vacuum of intelligent matter.
I’m not a McCain suppoter from the start, but it would be national suicide to support the opposition. Just to be clear, sitting it out like some did in ‘06 IS supporting the opposition. Deny that all you want, but I blame you for having to suffer through the horror comedy that is Nancy Pelosi and Harry Reed.
McPain has proven himself to be a conservative on many issues. Should a demoncrat get elected, at the very least, we’d lose the partial birth abortion ban and taxes would go up to legendary levels. There is still much at stake.
What I hear on this forum, from those who think any demoncrat would be a better choice than the McManiac are quitters, not conservatives, nor even Republicans.
For God’s sake, McCain would be a hundred times better than any democrat!
Get in the game! Primary elections don’t always turn out right, they are what they are. Get your friggin boots on an get on the line, we’ve got a hell of alot of work to do!
No recent AZ Presidential polls, but I can tell you a recent poll for his senate seat in 2010 with it being him vs our democratic governor she came out 11 points higher than McCain..... what does that tell you for his odds of beating Hillary?
At the very least, staying home means that Republicans will continue to bleed seats in Congress. If people decide that they absolute cannot vote for nominee X, they still need to come out and vote for their local and Congressional Republican candidates.
In this case — compared to 2006 — if McCain is the candidate for the GOP there is NO DIFFERENCE between McCain and Hillary or even Obama.... I don’t even know why McCain is a Republican.... why do you think he is so unpopular here in Arizona???? He only got re-elected because people are afraid to run against him.
Yes Romney is skunking the field like he skunked them in NV in the only tally that counts - the delegate count
72 {46%} - Romney
38 {24%} - mcCain
29 {19%} - huck
17 {11%} - also running
If he is so unpopular, why are people afraid to run against him? Let's face it- he has appeal to sufficient number of Republicans and yes, Independents (who you need to win an elections). He is able to hide his true nature to the average voter who has limited time and interest in researching candidates.
If McCain is to be defeated his opponents must be willing to expose him for who he is. Failure to do so brings about result like in SC where people claimed to be concerned about illegal immigration yet voted for McCain anyway. Part of what I think hurt Fred in SC was that he focused perhaps too much on Huckabee when it was clear that McCain was likely to win in SC. If he had gone after McCain with the same vigor as he did Huckabee maybe he could have shaved off enough votes from both candidates to at least come in second.
First, Bush won handily in 1988. Second, the comparison to Dole in 1996 is misplaced. Dole was up against a incumbent with a booming peacetime economy. He also had Perot siphoning off votes. And McCain is a much harder campaigner than Dole was (and frankly has more independent appeal).
The secret to beating Hillary is simple: independents, independents, independents. The one who wins them wins the White House. Hillary will lose them handily versus McCain under almost any scenario - they simply loathe her. The polls simply confirm time and again the formula that is already there.
And while you’re asking those questions, what the EFF is up with open primaries? What geniuses thought that up? How about REPUBLICANS choose the REPUBLICAN candidate?
