But, if he admired McCain’s ‘Maverick’ style in 1999, what has changed from then til now? McCain-Feingold-Thompson clearly isn’t a factor.

From listening to the different pundits, I take it Fred’s got a choice to make. Doesn’t sound good for him. Reading between the lines, it sounds like he would consult with McCain.
McCain might prefer Fred to stay in and keep taking votes away from Huck. I can’t imagine running a campaign like that, but I’ve heard it several times.
Or...McCain may prefer a staight out endorsement and Fred gets out.
I’m not saying this IS going to happen. I can’t stand the idea of Fred helping McCain. I’m simply telling you what I’m gleaning from their comments.
