In 1964, George Romney stood up and walked out of the 1964 GOP convention in protest of the Goldwater/Reagan conservatism of the day.

In truth, Romney desserted the convention because of their refusal to adopt a strong civil rights platform. That decision to abandon the civil rights principles that had been the backbone of the GOP for over a century would permanently alienate the African-American vote away from the GOP.

George Romney was right. Sadly, Barry Goldwater was wrong.
