You're right about South Carolina not being strictly winner take all. Also, according to http://www.thegreenpapers.com/, SC lost 23 of their 47 Republican delegates as a penalty for holding an early primary, and the current delegate count is 18 McCain and 6 Huckabee (with a possibility that the lost delegates will be restored by convention time).

I still think it will be a brokered convention. Maybe someone can convince McCain to accept the Secretary of Defense job in lieu of the Presidency.

“I agree that this is still salvageable for Fred—and that he should stay in; my only question is: does he want it enough? McCain will not win the South; I just can’t see it. And without the South I don’t see how he possibly turns out enough people in the fall at the top of the ticket.

If he doesn’t jump in, the very best thing he could to would be to throw his support to Rudy or Mitt—NOT to McCain as Fred Barnes and Kondrake seem to be praying for.

“Friend” or no friend, Fred is nowhere near McCain ideologically.

It would be a real disservice to his supporters to toss his support to a non “movement Conservative”. We very badly need for a true conservative to be the nominee if we are going to have a chance in hell of winning in the fall.

Other than Thompson, Rudy and Mitt are the closest thing we have left. I disagree totally with the General Consensus that McCain is the most likely to beat Hillary or Barack—I think that besides Huckabee, he is the most likely to lose to them. If they want a pro-immigration, anti tax-cut candidate, people will vote for Bloomberg or a Democrat. Let’s give the people another choice.

Here is my message for Fred:

Senator, I cannot tell you how much pride and admiration I have for you, your positions, and the classy way you have been conducting this campaign. I’ve supported you all along, and I believe that it would be by far the best thing for the party and the country if you stayed in the race and gave it your best shot at least until Super Tuesday. Because you ARE the example of how a campaign should be conducted, and of what a real Republican ought to be.

Even if you did not win the day outright today, you finished respectably and momentum was building for you all week. You passed up Romney, and you were nipping at Huck’s heels, I think if you stayed in for the long haul, you would easily garner enough delegates to have a serious say in the Republican platform; and there is a distinct possibility you might even decide who the candidate is to be in a brokered convention.

I know you are tired and road weary, and want to be with your family. Running for President is one hell of a tough thing to do. ( being the President isn’t exactly easy either). But Americans who really love their country have always found a way to perservere for things that really matter. Washington crossing the Deleware. Lincoln hiring Grant. Petraeus turning Iraq around in its darkest hour. This is what patriots do.

You can still have a huge impact—one way or another—on who becomes the next President; Senator, you can still be the next President. That is far too valuable to abandon the playing field to some two-bit Arkansas shyster now.

The bottom line is that you are still the standard bearer for the vision of the founders and of the vision of Reagan. We need that vision right now. The longer you can stay in and get your message out there, the better.

Take Huckabee out; the rest will take care of itself. And let’s see what your count is in February. It is not too late to win this election; just ask Rudy Giuliani...”

Thanks for continuing to fight the good fight.

First of all thanks for the welcome. I’ve read FR regularly since I discovered it a year ago, but am just now starting to post.

Secondly, I have to ask who you would vote for if Thompson drops out (assuming you would vote for Thompson)? The pathological liar, Huckabee? I like McCain on his Foreign Policy but that’s it, he’s a single-issue conservative really. Guliani? I’d take him over McCain, but still, no conservative.

Brit was my favorite... he is no better than matthews now. His wife left Fox as News Director last year and Fox slammed hard left to win dim support. They were boycotted by the dims and now are making nice. murdoch ordered this change.

There is no Republican coalition any longer. Read this thread through and get ready for President Hillary Rodham Clinton. Conservatives are not to blame in this debacle.

Dumbest comment I've heard all day

If you tried thinking for yourself, it wouldn't sound so dumb.

Romney is a fraud.

That is a very good question- one I’ve been pondering too. One thing is clear- Common Sense PAC was working in Iowa weeks before the caucus- those phone calls must have been effective. The influence of churches is something that I’d like to see looked at as well.

A registered FL Democrat cannot experience McPain in the primary. But he can have his pain with the popular HRC! Remember FL people went with their Bill in 1996.

Conservatives are just so outnumbered in the Republican primaries, as recent results show, that they cannot affect general elections much anywhere any more, maybe not even in KS or OK. People think HRC will “help” them with their home financial problems.

If Thompson doesn't get the nod, that would be a disaster. I might hold my nose and vote for Huck, but I might not, I haven't decided yet. I will hold my nose and vote for Rudy if he gets it. Romney's governing record and what he's said on record don't match up, so he's an unknown quantity to me, but I'll take unknown over a dem. I will not vote for McCain under any circumstances whatsoever.

McCain is a PROVEN fraud.......Gang of 14, McCain-Feingold, Amnesty.........his own state sits on the border and he does NOTHING.

On the other hand, Mitt is only in theory a fraud, while McCain has regularly stuck it to us his entire career.

Rudy failed to take on Hillary when he had his chance. He is just like her in men’s clothing on too many issues. (well, at least it’s usually men’s clothing)

I still think the biggest problem for the GOP is the lack of informed registered Republican voters. Our GOP “base” has the wrong idea about the purpose of government. They see it now in the old liberal shibboleth: “Who gets what, when, and how?”

So, in TX, it will be a Romney-McPain showdown, with Paul the only other candidate still on the ballot, so it seems? I wonder if the congressional district will also repudiate Rep. Paul.

On year from TODAY, the American people will be able to sleep again at night as their Bill and HRC return officially to the White House. The people will be rescued from some dreadful danger.
