Fredmentum update
corner.nationalreview.com ^ | 01/17 07:17 PM | Mark Steyn

A Fred staffer from one of the primary states he's lost already writes in to dispute my view that the Thompson campaign lacks an overriding theme and a memorable slogan. This is the view from his state:

"Here are some other things missing from the campaign:

1) a finance chair

2) a clear chain of command

3) top-down loyalty

4) a candidate who was willing to campaign for more than 4 hours at day

5) direct mail

6) a college student coordinator

7) a media strategy

Other than that, the campaign had everything."

In New Hampshire, I know of two town chairs for the Fred campaign who wound up voting for other candidates.

Do you believe Mark Steyn is lying?

Either Mark Steyn is lying or woefully ignorant.

Anybody willing to spend more than 5 minutes on the internet would not make a false claim like he does not campaign more than 4 hours a day.

Simply looking at his scheduled campaign events disproves that canard.

Why do you single out Fred for that “honor”?...

Rudy is the *only* one running commercials...

May I? Steyn is almost certaiinly telling the truth, but he may be...

1. Quoting a guy who is lying.

2. Quoting a guy who is telling the truth, and is talking about Fred's limited visits to NH when he talks about four hours.

But one thing's clear: Fred isn't lazy. He's working hard. I still believe he can win or get 2nd in SC, because the polls in Michigan were off by nine points.

Is it just me or does it seem like every candidate is so cash-strapped they're doing things one state at a time? It looks to me like everybody is planning to be in until Super Duper Tuesday.

That's the real winnowing day. After that we'll probably be down to two.

Given limited means, though, it's hard to argue with the decision.

It was his only option

I remember seeing one of the NH voters say when interviewed that he would not vote for one of the candidates because their campaign had not called them as many times as the others.

That is truely pathetic and shows that at least that particular voter did not care about the issues, but how much attention a candidate gives them.

Looks like the same goes for the campaign workers.

No.

That’s why I asked the question.

“Either Mark Steyn is lying or woefully ignorant.”

I think you’ll find most Freepers will disagree with your assessment.

Mark didn’t say that, the person who WROTE him said that. Unless you believe Mark is making up the e-mail, you should be faulting the Thompson campaign guy who sent the e-mail, not Mark.

I'm seeing Rudy commercials here in Iowa, which seems really strange, since we already voted. Hardly saw any for him before the caucuses.

Hillary isn’t cash strapped—— with over $50 million in her campaign account... she can afford to swing from coast to coast if she wants (and don’t be surprised if she starts blitzing hard to keep Obama in “his place”....

That was my thought. “Supporters”, by its very definition, means that you are “for” a candidate and willing to do what is necessary to help them win, whether they can/will campaign in your state or not. These folks seem to be “fair weather friends”, at the very best. There’s zero loyalty.

Their “soft little hands” must be almost as soft as their heads!

I was only talking about just the GOP candidates, actually. Hillary and Obama being the only credible candidates on the Dem side means there’s a lot more money to go around over there.

I think you’re probably right about that...the money that is out there is being split so many ways all the campaigns are having issues...

What “My guy” did in the past is irrelevant or a lie. What he says today is what counts. What “Your guy” did wrong is still relevant and cannot be forgiven. “My guy” is a ‘true’ conservative no matter what you say about how he governed or voted or whatever. “Your guy” is a fake conservative who is just saying what he needs to to win the election.

Only to be “left behind?”

What are you talking about?

The New Hampshire primary took place as planned. Volunteering, donating, organizing, campaigning, etc. is what we do when we support a candidate. That candidate does not have to be standing by my side in order for me to work to get him elected. It’s a matter of principle, not personal pride.

I’ll work for Fred when things gear up for the primary in my state, and I don’t expect to get to see him or hear him.

In my book, those New Hampshire so-called “supporters” are political pansies.

If your not in SC you won't get the chance. Fred will be in the Bahamas by Monday

It's being split AND there isn't that much of it. When we get down to a couple of candidates, the money will flow.
