I don’t think this accurately captures Fred Thompson’s position on the human life amendment.

He was asked if he would pursue that and he said no—that it didn’t have a realistic chance. Rather, he would seek to overturn Roe v. Wade and return to the state we were in prior to 1973, with the abortion decision at the state level.

That does not mean he would oppose a right to life amendment.

Of course, the President has no say in Constitutional amendments—that’s up to the individual states and the Congress.

I don’t know what he’s said about the definition of marriage act—do you have any quotes? He probably has the same position as on the human life amendment—he won’t push for it, but he won’t oppose it. With his emphasis on federalism, he probably sees this issue as up to the states.

I wish Thompson had clarified that a little better. In some of his comments it sounded as if he was literally opposed to the amendment. I know it isn't his position, but it left an impression that his stance on the HLA is no different than Hillary's or Obama's.

Romney said a few weeks ago on Meet the Press that Abortion should be left up to the states. He has the same stance as Fred Thompson.
