Exchanges in Latest Debate Highlight a New Dynamic in the Republican Field (Fred Thompson)
NY Times ^ | January 11, 2008 | MICHAEL COOPER and MICHAEL LUO

Fred D. Thompson tried...

--snip--

But it was Mr. Thompson’s performance, in which he shook off the laid-back style that has defined his candidacy, that provided...

“This is a battle for the heart and soul of the Republican Party and its future,” said Mr. Thompson, who has staked his run on a strong showing in South Carolina. The primary there is Jan. 19.

“On the one hand,” he said, “you have the Reagan revolution, you have the Reagan coalition of limited government and strong national security. And the other hand, you have the direction that Governor Huckabee would take us in. He would be a Christian leader, but he would also bring about liberal economic policies, liberal foreign policies.”

Mr. Thompson then lit into Mr. Huckabee, the former Baptist preacher and Arkansas governor who won the Iowa caucus, for wanting to close the prison at Guantánamo Bay, for supporting what he called “taxpayer-funded programs for illegals” and for wanting to sign a law restricting smoking.

“That’s not the model of the Reagan coalition, that’s the model of the Democratic Party,” he said.

--snip--

Mr. Thompson leavened his responses with the kind of one-liners that many supporters had hoped he would use sooner.

Asked about the United States response in a confrontation with Iranian speedboats, Mr. Thompson said, “I think one more step and they would have been introduced to those virgins that they’re looking forward to seeing.” At another point, he offered that “you can tell that the news is good coming out of Iraq because you read so little about it in The New York Times.”

He also went after Mr. McCain on immigration.

“I disagree with my friend John McCain on the bill that they proposed last year,” Mr. Thompson said. “I disagree with my friend Governor Huckabee...”

Someone explain something to me. After the debates last night they had the Luntz group on. They overwhelmingly chose Fred as the winner of the debate and made all the proper statements about his credentials etc. Then when they were asked who they were going to vote for they just as overwhelmingly sided with McCain.

IMHO, it's a mix of McCain being a former POW and perceived electability. They don't think a conservative can win.

I volunteered for McCain in NY in 2000. I was a registered Conservative in NY when I lived here until the end of 2007 when I registered with the GOP in order to vote for Thompson in the upcoming GOP primary. As a fellow veteran, I like McCain, but he's disappointed me too many times.

In the general election he would only be facing two liberals instead of the twelve now staring down his barrel.

Then you are obviously rooting for a Guliani/Romney ticket.

Perhaps.

Seemed moronic to post to me explaining someone else's post to me, all the while infering I am ignorant.... I may be a lot of things, but ignorant is well down on the list.

Not to mention the pollsters are always in the backwind somewhere with what is really going on. Fred has a very high chance, and its for this reason:

After a strong showing in South Carolina, he will have opened up a white gate to the conservative base in the American South and Midwest. There are red states that are A(sick of the democrats) and B(Can’t TRUST the democrats). I’m confident that the SC campaign is going to propel him ahead of the others.

SUPPORT FRED 08!! CONSERVATIVES, THIS IS OUR GUY!!

Fred has already demonstrated that the real key to why conservatism will hammer liberalism unrelentlessly in a general election is because...and let me shout this out loud...

LIBERAL ARGUMENTS CANNOT STAND UP TO CONSERVATIVE ARGUMENTS. PERIOD.

Didn’t you see how Huckleberry looked as if he’d rather be anyplace else, and had a rebuttal that pretty much sounded as if it reflected the image of a mouse ducking back into its hole (to quote a fellow member on Freerepublic) when Fred literally tore him apart about his socialist economic and immigration policies? Case in point

If you stick Thompson up against Osama or Billary, he will destroy them on the microphone. A debate between the two would be like watching Joe Pesci get whacked in Casino

Additionally...

If Huckleberry getting ripped wasn’t a perfect illustration of how the truth (conservatism) overwhelms and dismantles an illusion (liberalism), then just look at the grassroots of this entire thread.

Americanophile, an obvious liberal Rino, came in here with a few stupid assertions with no proof or evidence to back it up (because there is none, and he knew it), and all of our fellow conservatives on here let him know about it. No one was out of line, and no one mimicked his one-liner responses. The challenge was for him to enter into a discussion and back up what he said.

Why do we challenge him? Because we know we’ll win. It’s that simple. Take into effect the liberals that occasionally call into conservative talk radio. They get dismantled, to a T. All of the time.

This, in essence, is what Thompson really needs to think about during his campaign, and in the future as we head toward November. He needs to really let loose the conservative mindset that will literally:

A: Cream Romney, Giuliani, and Huckabee, exposing them for the Rinos that they are to win the nomination

B: Cream any of the opposing democrats, whether it’s Fraudwards, Osama, or Billary in a debate

C: Win the Presidency

Fair enough. Probably shouldn’t have responded but it kind of struck me the wrong way this morning. I will fine myself and donate an additional $100 to Fred’s campaign. ;)

Thompson shook off his laid-back style...

Utterly fascinating how many people thought Thompson did a great job in the debate yesterday because he was not himself! Ironic, isn't it?

Fair enough. I really do know what you mean about being affected by so much dissension. I am sending Fred another $250.00 tonight... and will max out towards the end of next week. We have got to get him elected! Have a good evening and again I’m sorry.
