If I remember correctly, Michael Barone was explaining how they use EXIT polls (not the actual votes), and he said one of the first things they do is look for anomalies. For example, one of the towns exit polls indicated that one candidate was getting 87% of the vote, so they figured out that it probably wasn't reliable info, so they don't use it.
Put the tin foil hats away, I don't think Michael Barone ever said one person actually got that amount of votes.
