Serb PM tells EU to choose between Serbia and Kosovo

BELGRADE: The European Union must choose between signing an accord with Serbia or deploying a mission to Kosovo as a prelude to an independence declaration by the breakaway province, Serbia's prime minister said on Thursday.

In a written statement, Vojislav Kostunica said that when EU foreign ministers met on January 28, the bloc would have to choose "whether it wants a whole... Serbia as a partner, or it wants to create a 'quasi state' on Serb territory".

"The EU must choose... whether it will sign a Stabilisation and Association Agreement with Serbia or, under United States pressure, send a mission to implement (a plan for) supervised independence of Kosovo, snatching part of Serbia's territory."

Kosovo is expected to declare independence early this year. Thursday's statement echoes a Kostunica-sponsored parliament resolution that Serbia would shun offers of EU membership if the bloc recognises Kosovo as an independent state.

Kostunica indicated that instead of signing the agreement -- a first step towards EU membership -- Serbia might take a step back. If the EU took the "illegal decision" to send a mission to Kosovo, it would effectively be making "null and void" the initialling of the accord in December, he said.

One of Slovenia’s main reasons for seceding was so that their wealth wouldn’t be funneled into the Kosovo hell-hole the Albanians had created!

Its a wooden horse Ljubivoje, and the splinters in his arse are making him rancorous this week. He’s been so edgy since the ED treatments.

Seems like the last time Europe had to choose sides over an issue involving Serbia WWI was the result.

Neither the Slovenes nor the Croats were happy about sending the hard currency they earned to be redistributed elsewhere in Yugoslavia, not just to Kosovo.

But that doesn't alter the fact that Slovenia's leadership are on record as pointing to Serbia's treatment of Kosovo, and their fear of similar treatment, as the reason they left Yugoslavia.

It ain't the K-Albanians that 5 ex-Yugoslav Republics decided they were better off without before going their own way, but if you can convince yourself otherwise, you go ahead and have fun with it.

To my knowledge very few bodies have actually been found in Kosovo since the NATO forces entered Kosovo. So, the rumors of a genocide there were vastly exagerated. In fact, I believe that the number of people found dead in Kosovo wasn’t that many more than the number of people that we killed in our bombing of Serbia. Not to mention the fact that since we arrived many churches and monestaries have been burned along with some Serbs been killed. So, I don’t think there is any moral imperative for us to violate international law by recognizing a new state.

To my knowledge

You need to work on your knowledge.

Last time I tallied the numbers, back in 2004, it was ~5k Albanian victims recovered in Kosovo, and a further 836 recovered in Serbia, where the Serbs had moved them in a failed attempt to play "hide the bodies".

I believe

Your belief is wrong.

The Serbs to this day haven't produced an accurate accounting of their losses, either civilian or military, during Allied Force. It is notable, however, that when Milosevic's public prosecutor levied charges against NATO's leadership, he utilized the same number of civilian casualties that Human Rights Watch had come up with, ~500.

The salient point here, however, is that for Belgrade's claims to the right to govern Kosovo to be taken seriously, they would have had to demonstrate both the willingness to be responsible to Kosovo's citizenry and accountable for their own actions, neither of which have ever been in evidence. We are still waiting for a full accounting of the crimes perpetrated by Serbian forces in Kosovo - but since the Serbs know that doing so would undercut their claim to sovereignity over Kosovo, they have declined. After 1999 and NATO's intervention, however, there's really nothing Belgrade could have done to retain Kosovo within their borders, your perception of moral imperatives notwithstanding.

Lastly, if you're going to complain about destruction of cultural heritage in Kosovo, you should acquaint yourself with not only what the Serbs have suffered, but what they have inflicted. They're the reigning champions in the 1990's Balkan church destruction derby by virtue of their efforts to erase evidence of Catholicism in the RSK and RS, so using it as a crutch to support Serbian claims regarding Kosovo is something of a non-starter.

I was thinking the number of dead found in Kosovo was around 3,000 but your 5,000 could be a more accurate tally. I think the estimates for American Bombing victims are between 500 and 800. However, that number of people found dead in Kosovo does not tell us how they died. I would imagine that at least some of those dead were KLA fighters, citizens killed by KLA fighters, and citizens killed during the bombing.

So, if around 2,000 civilians end up having been killed by Government forces in the process of fighting a bloody civil war. Was that worth the US killing 500-800 civilians in bombing campaign that ended up focussing on bombing civilian infrastructure. Certainly its the huge humanitarian crisis the media and NATO were claiming during the bombing when they claimed that tens to hundreds of thousands of people were being killed.

that number of people found dead in Kosovo does not tell us how they died

While the OMPF statistics do not reveal any information regarding who was responsible for the deaths in their cases, the ICTY, who recovered 4,211 victims before the OMPF took over was - targeting specifically those sites identified as containing victims of Serbian crimes. Add to that the 836 victims recovered in Serbia proper and the number is over 5k.

It is informative to note what happened in the Republika Srpska in 2004, where pressure finally induced the government in Banja Luka to disclose the location of remaining Srebrenica-related mass graves, which are still being exhumed to this day. Such a revelation has not been forthcoming from Belgrade regarding the whereabouts of the remainder of victims from Kosovo, and given the current leadership in Belgrade, does not look to be forthcoming any time soon.

Leaving the number of victims murdered by the Serbian Army and Police forces, there is also the matter of Milosevic attempting to ethnically cleanse Kosovo of its Albanian population. We had warned Milosevic against just such a course of action back in 1992, backed with the threat of American military intervention should he choose to go through with such plans. Milosevic went forward with his plans, and the rest is, as they say, history.

Nice try, Hopeless, but Dhimmi lies don’t conceal the reality that the KLA killed more people in Kosovo than the Serbs ever did.

Why do you work so hard against the Christian Serbs?
