Don’t really buy it about Romney. This wouldn’t help Romney at all, no reason to think that Fred’s supporters would go to Mitt. The most likely gain would be in the form of McCain.

I agree. But I think McCain, for all his policy shortcomings, is too principled to spread lies about a good man and a friend. Mitt Romney is not above that.

Well, in all likely it wasn’t McCain or Romney but someone in the Thompson campaign. The article in the Politico sites several advisers to the Thompson Campaign. That doesn’t mean Thompson knows anything about it or would plan to; but put the title “adviser” on anybody and they love to shoot their mouth off. They may have been just shooting off that without a solid 3rd place, whats the point in going forward.
