WARDEN MESSAGE: LTTE ATTACK IN SRI LANKA WILDLIFE SANCTUARY
U.S. Embassy Colombo issued the following Warden Message on January 9, 2008:
On January 8th at approximately 10:30am, Non-Cabinet Minister D.M. Dassanayake was fatally wounded by a fragmentation mine (claymore) explosion in the vicinity of Ja-Ela, on the main road between Colombo and Sri Lanka’s International Airport. The blast has so far claimed two lives and injured more than ten security personnel and civilians.
Later the same evening at approximately 8:00pm, an explosion took place in the vicinity of the Lake House Building in Fort, Colombo. According to Sri Lankan law enforcement, the explosive device was placed inside a public telephone booth. There were no injuries except for one civilian who was treated for shock, and the area has been cordoned off.
In light of these incidents American citizens are advised to avoid government and military convoys and to continue to defer non-essential visits to crowded public places and high-profile public venues.
As always, the Embassy reminds American citizens to continue to be aware of their surroundings and vigilant about their personal security. Americans are advised to be on alert if visiting government facilities and public venues. Americans should also continue to avoid military installations, government and military convoys traveling on the roads and, where possible, government buildings, as they have in the past been targets for LTTE violence. There are likely to be traffic disruptions as Sri Lankan security forces increase their security checks. Americans are again reminded to cooperate fully with Sri Lankan security forces as they implement increased security measures.

President Warns Iran of ‘Serious Consequences’

WASHINGTON, Jan. 9, 2008 – President Bush today warned Iran against attacking U.S. vessels in the Strait of Hormuz.
“There will be serious consequences if they attack our ships, pure and simple,” Bush said during a news conference in Jerusalem. “And my advice to them is, don’t do it.”
Bush was referring to an incident in which five high-speed Iranian boats reportedly threatened to attack the USS Port Royal, USS Hopper and USS Ingraham as they were entering the Persian Gulf on Jan. 6.
Defense officials said the Iranian boats maneuvered aggressively, threatened the U.S. ships via radio and dropped objects into the water in the path of one of the ships.
The president said “our ships were moving along very peacefully off the Iranian border in territorial water — international waters — and Iranian boats came out and were very provocative. And it was a dangerous gesture on their part.”
Bush said that earlier in the day, Stephen J. Hadley, the national security adviser, made it “abundantly clear that all options are on the table to protect our assets.”
During the news conference, Bush also addressed the threat to world peace posed by Iran’s attempts to gain nuclear weapons capability, and he urged the international community to pressure the country to abandon its uranium enrichment efforts.
“I believe that pressure — economic pressure, financial sanctions – will cause the people inside of Iran to have to make a considered judgment about whether or not it makes sense for them to continue to enrich or face world isolation,” Bush said. “The country is paying an economic price for its intransigence and its unwillingness to tell the truth.”
Bush said Iran continues to pose a threat, even after halting its secret nuclear weapons program.
“A country which once had a secret program can easily restart a secret program,” he said. “A country which can enrich for civilian purposes can easily transfer that knowledge to a military program.”
Bush said the international community must recognize the threat Iran poses, and said the United States will continue working with countries in the region, and around the world, to encourage them to work together to confront that threat.
Bush emphasized that the United States has no quarrel with the Iranian people.
“It’s a people with a proud history and a great tradition, but they are being misled by their government,” he said. “The actions of their government are causing there to be isolation and economic stagnation.”

U.S. Rains 40,000 Pounds of Bombs on Al Qaeda Targets in Northern Iraq

BAGHDAD — U.S. bombers and jet fighters unleashed 40,000 pounds of explosives during a 10-minute airstrike Thursday, flattening what the military called safe havens for Al Qaeda in Iraq on the southern outskirts of the capital.
The strikes, carried out above approaching U.S. and Iraqi troops, was part of Operation Phantom Phoenix, a nationwide campaign launched Tuesday against Al Qaeda in Iraq.
The air raid was followed by a ground attack that led to 12 arrests and the discovery of two houses used to torture kidnap victims, according to an Iraqi army officer who spoke on condition of anonymity because he was not authorized to speak to the media. He said the troops faced no resistance.
A military statement said two B-1 bombers and four F-16 fighters dropped the bombs on 40 targets in Arab Jabour in 10 strikes. Al Qaeda fighters are believed to control Arab Jabour, a Sunni district lined with citrus groves and scarred by daily violence.
“Thirty-eight bombs were dropped within the first 10 minutes, with a total tonnage of 40,000 pounds,” the statement said.
The Iraqi army officer, whose unit is in the Arab Jabour area, said the airstrikes began at 8 a.m. and led to the burning of several citrus groves and the destruction of two houses used by gunmen. He said soldiers confiscated documents and weapons including AK-47s.

Homicide Bomb Rocks Pakistani High Court, Killing Dozens, Injuring 70
LAHORE, Pakistan — A homicide bomber blew himself up among police outside a court in eastern Pakistan Thursday, killing at least 24 people and wounding over 70 more, minutes before a planned anti-government protest.
The blast in front of Lahore High Court was the latest in a wave of attacks targeting politicians and security forces ahead of Feb. 18 parliamentary elections. There was no immediate claim of responsibility, but suspicion will likely fall on militants linked to Taliban and Al Qaeda.
It came as Scotland Yard investigators visited Lahore, the capital of Punjab province, where laboratories are testing forensic evidence in the assassination two weeks ago of opposition leader Benazir Bhutto in Rawalpindi, a garrison city to the north.

Iran Airs Own Video of Boats With U.S. Ships in Persian Gulf, Showing No Standoff Between Vessels

CAIRO, Egypt — Iran aired video Thursday of its boats and U.S. naval ships in the Persian Gulf in an apparent attempt to show that there was no confrontation between the vessels.
The grainy 5-minute, 20-second video — without sound or narration — showed a man speaking into a handheld radio, with three U.S. ships floating in the distance. It appeared to be shot from a small boat bobbing at least 100 yards from the American warships.
The footage did not show any Iranian boats approaching the U.S. vessels or any provocation. But the short clip likely did not show Sunday’s entire encounter, which U.S. Navy officials described as threatening, and said lasted about 20 minutes.
It aired on Iran’s state-run English-language channel Press TV, whose signal is often blocked inside Iran.
The clip also aired on the state-run Al-Alam Arabic channel, with an announcer saying the video showed “a routine and regular measure.”
Later, another state TV channel aired four minutes of audio it said were radio communications between the Iranian boats and American ships.

Five men are accused of trying to kill a 20-year-old man, who was shot outside a restaurant on Walkley Rd.
Ottawa police yesterday charged Hussein Mohammad, 21, Mohamed Najdi, 20, Abdulaziz Abdullah, 21, Ahmed Zalal, 21, and Yusuf Ibrahim, 20, with attempted murder, aggravated assault, possession of a prohibited firearm, possession of proceeds of crime and possession for the purpose of trafficking.
Ibrahim was further charged with breach of recognizance.
All the accused are from Ottawa, except Abdullah, who is from Calgary.
They appeared in court yesterday.
Around 10 p.m. Monday, police and paramedics were called to the Tim Hortons and Wendy’s parking lot, just west of Conroy Rd., after the victim was shot in the chest as he was standing outside the restaurant.
VICTIM RECOVERING
Two staff members with the Ottawa Paramedic Service were on break inside the coffee shop and administered first aid on the victim before other paramedics arrived.
The victim continues to recover in hospital from a critical gunshot wound.
Two men sitting in a BMW outside the restaurant were almost hit by a stray bullet, which travelled through the open driver’s side window and struck the windshield from the inside.
A witness, who was also parked at the restaurant, said he saw the suspect vehicle drive through the lot before it fled through the neighbouring Esso station.
Police believe the shooting was not random.
The Ottawa police guns and gangs unit seized a handgun and laid charges against five individuals after executing a warrant in the city’s south end. Mohamed Abdullahi, 20; Anwar Aden, 21; Liban Hussein, 25; Moussa Osman, 21; and Farida Duale, 53, have been charged with five firearms offences, as a result of a search at a Horsdal Private residence. In addition, Mr. Abdullahi was charged with three counts of breach of undertaking, Mr. Aden was charged with five counts of breach of undertaking, and Mr. Hussein and Ms. Duale have been charged with a single count each of breach of probation. Mr. Abdullahi, Mr. Aden, Mr. Hussein and Mr. Osman were also identified as being associated with Ottawa street gangs.
