OCEANSIDE ---- A pursuit suspect from Oceanside stopped his vehicle midspan on the Coronado Bridge, exited the car and jumped off the bridge at about 7:25 p.m.Monday, along with an Oceanside police dog that tried to stop him, according to California Highway Patrol officer Larry Landeros. The man lived, but the dog died.
The pursuit began in Oceanside at 6:44 p.m after police suspected the driver was intoxicated. During the pursuit, the man was involved in a hit-and-run crash, authorities said.Highway Patrol officers joined the pursuit southbound on Interstate 5 as the car approached the Coronado Bridge, Landeros said.
The police dog lunged at the suspect as he hesitated momentarily after exiting his vehicle. The dog, a German shepherd, and the suspect both fell and the dog's body has been recovered, Landeros said.

the usual anti law enforcement, cop hating suspects show up on all of these threads.
Sick puppy? No,...*smile
I question why, when a perp stops his car and exits the vehicle, why, why, why do you put the dog on the guy?
They did not need the dog to make the arrest, puppy should have been in the cruser.
These guys had guns, clubs, tazers and lots of help....but they still let the drunk guy throw puppy over the railing.
What is up with that?
Dogs have great value to policing, I question the need to have your dog ‘subdue’ a traffic offender.
The dog was being used to teach someone a lesson.....IMHO
Oh, and another thing.
Gotta question the wisdom of chasing a drunk guy on the freeway for half an hour.
Gotta be a better way.
That said, its amazing the number of urban, often non-white people who are petrified of dogs. Our cockapoo on more than one occasion caused some people to go into headlong retreat when she went up to greet them. Who knows how many sets of underwear would have been soiled if it had been a large working dog.
Its very unlikely that happened. Much more likely is that the guy jumped and the dog, per its training, did not let go.
Color him “correct” because he is.
The ‘armed and dangerous’ are shooting both pets and their owners at alarming rates. Unfortunately, the officers who saw themselves as serving the public are being replaced with those who have a disturbing propensity to see themselves as public masters.
Libroid media also makes a great deal of any death relating to the police or their dogs. Given that being a policeman is so Not Risky that it is not listed as one of the ten most dangerous jobs, I suspect the media attention is because media tends to like police states.
the cops suspected he was drunk. they did not know for sure.
as for releasing the dog on the perp, that was the right call. dogs are faster than humans. this was an unusual case. 99 out of 100 times, the dogs are fine and they subdue the perp. the only reason this went bad was because it was on a bridge.
“Thats crazy talk...”
Perhaps, “That’s egregiously anthropomorphic. . .” would be more descriptive?
Hmmmn - don’t Democraps vote because the nice politicians offer them some equivalent, like an entitlement?
Unfortunately, their votes seem to be taking all of America off the bridge with them.
BAAAAD Democraps!
Actually, it’s because Big Mo said they were unclean. That is a real hoot, given the personal hygiene level of Arabs then. And that doesn’t even address their other habits, cultural patterns, ad nauseam. Winston Churchhill described Arabs/Islam back in 1899 in his book The River War.
“The world has gone upside-down.
We have a 2005 FReeper lecturing a 1998 FReeper on etiquette.”
It’s a post structuralist world, as the professor of Women’s Studies at U. of South Florida said when questioned about her paper announcing the “male lesbian” concept.
No, I didn’t make that up.
c’mon, we are just dyin to hear your ‘I hate cops because’ story.
Hope you never really need one.
wrong. Food for good behavior isn't the way you train a dog for Schutzhund or any other police function. At least not from what I've learned.
The behavior is hard wired instinct that is positively reinforced with affection.
The dog didn't "give his life" for anything other than instinct that mandated the dog chase and latch onto a suspect, that was crazier than a loon and jumped.
I love Shepards, have owned 3 and they're great with the kids and a very nice alarm system.
You might be right, I’ve never trained a dog. Instinct may be right... I’m sure the neighbors dog wasn’t “trained” to kill my cat, but it did anyway.
Hope you never really need one.

Why would you need one... they show up after the fact , write a simplistic report that is never acted upon and drive away... being a cop is a wonderful profession for gutless uniform fetishists.
glad you showed up so I could add you to my list of people to avoid here.
Seatbelt violations aren’t crimes. They are civil infractions. I agree. Get rid of them through legislative action with this caveat. Insurance companies do not have to pay your medical bills if you get ejected and no free medical from the taxpayers. You choose no seatbelt, you pay the price if things go wrong.
Both of the individuals you have castigated are in fact, correct.
So what. Your cat was just an animal. No loss.
Humans have judgment, the dog does not. The dog is dead because humans sent it in rather than go themselves. A human would have let go rather than be dragged over the side. The dog was trained not to let go except on command. Result is a dead dog.
Dogs are effective in apprehension due to fear factor. A solo dog can not stand up to a trained human. Its one of the reasons you see the handler stay close to the dogs these days. Years ago doctrine was to send the dog in alone. PDs lost a lot of dogs that way.
Not saying the perp did right, but the most likely answer is that the handler effectively sent the dog to its death needlessly.
