Sports announcers were urged to drop "throw under the bus" when assigning blame to a player. "It is a call for the media to start issuing a thesaurus to everyone in front of a camera," I thought they already pulled out the pages looking for other ways to say "beat", as in "Team X _______ Team Y"...

Misuse of "decimate" is one of my pet peeves.
Back in the day, the Romans handled pacification a little more directly than we do today. They'd just line up the village and stick a sword into every 10th man. Ergo..."decimate".
You can never "completely decimate" anything. There will always be 90% of it left.
Oh well. It is what it is.

Can we also do away with,
" To be honest,...." I absolutely hate that. I'd prefer that one would always be honest when speaking.

Some words and phrases sagged under the weight of overuse, contributors said, citing the application of "organic" to everything from computer software to dog food.Related to this is the annoying trend in referring to computer systems and their associated software and hardware peripherals as "ecosystems".... /gaaah

Other teenage linguistic indiscretions such as the often meaningless use of "random" I have a teenager and this is like finger nails on a chalk board to me.

My pet peeves (overused, faddish, or downright incorrect words):
"Robust" for strong. "Going forward" for "in the future." "Ongoing" for "going on," as in "negotiations are ongoing".

The word ‘thwart’ got it’s fair share of overuse this past year. SHortly after Chertoff used it when describing the derailed plot to hijack airliners out of London, not a day went by when I didn’t read an article using that word.
Writers need a thesaurus.

“Sooner rather than later”. Seven syllables that, if they mean anything at all, mean the same as the one syllable “soon”.

"x is the new y," as in "(age) 70 is the new 50" or "chocolate is the new sex.""Back in the day"
You have no idea how much I despise these two. Arrrghhh.

The one scenario where I would correctly apply the overused term "
perfect storm" would be if the Senate and Congress became heavily Democratic, and we end up with a liberal Democrat in the White House.
In the movie, three storms converge to become an unusual threat...
