The point is that Bloomberg is going to spend his billions positioning himself as non-partisan, independent, gridlock buster, financially conservative, successful businessman. He has no intentions of winning. He is going to court independents exclusively.
Bloombergs aim is to split the independent vote and get Hillary elected since it is in the best interest of New York City and his fellow New Yorkers.
He can spend a trillion dollars but voters aren't going to buy it. You have a warped definition of what "independents" are. These are people who lean libertarian and populist right. They are already supporting Dr. Paul and some are supporting Obama. They are simply not going to vote for Bloomberg.
The only thing Bloomberg is going to do is carve up that thumb-sucking base of sheeple who consistently vote Democrat and believe in the MSM gloom-and-doom stories about how "nothing" ever gets done in Washington.
I predict when the dust settles Bloomberg will pull out, especially if the GOP is stupid enough to nominate Rudy or Huckster because he knows conservatives will stay home or vote 3rd party and that'll give Hillary the election right there.
And both the GOP and various issue groups (eg the NRA) are going to spend money tearing through his notorious privacy and private life.
Bloomberg is like so many business-types with money playing at politics: he’ll run until he suddenly figures out that the punches are pretty hard, the elbows pretty sharp, at the national level.
One other aspect I’ve forgotten to mention, but which needs to be remembered:
Bloomberg is Jewish. That carries just as much baggage in the presidential race as Romney’s religion does.
