DUH! VW’s been selling TDI’s for a decade or damned close to it now... 50MPG less overall contamination than any hybrid and lower overall cost etc etc...
Hybrids, at least in their current form are a joke.

And Rudolf Diesel’s engine can be run on straight used vegetable oil from restaurant fryolators if poured through a 10-micron paper filter into a secondary, heated fuel tank. That’s great mileage on free fuel. e.g.: greasecar.com

I fuel my 7.3L Ford Powerstroke at a cardlock where the big rigs fuel and pay about 10 to 15% less than I would at regular station. I pay less for diesel than others pay for gasoline. And if I was using a gas engine instead of diesel I would be filling up 5 times to every time I fill this diesel tank. You figure how much I save? It is plenty!
Got under 125,000 miles and it still runs like a well oiled top.

I got a 2002 Jetta. And it gets 50+ MPG and is quiet, clean and in the winter I can run a Kerosene blend with it for easy starts even in COLD IOWA!

Several years ago, Daimler-Benz was talking about putting a diesel/electric hybrid powertrain into the Mercedes-Benz R Class vehicles. I don't know why it was not done. A diesel/electric hybrid would be even more efficient than a gasoline electric hybrid.
D-B has a lot of experience with building diesel/electric hybrids - remember all those U-boats in WWII were diesel/electric hybrids.

I drove a diesel BMW 5 series station wagon for two weeks last month. I was very impressed with the performance and economy.
