Reacting to the assassination of former Pakistan Prime Minister Benazir Bhutto, Republican presidential candidate Fred Thompson told WND, "This is a war, a clash of civilizations." Thompson, commenting at the FAIR talk radio row in Des Moines, Iowa, said he suspected al-Qaida was responsible for the attack.
"The chance that a secular woman had a possibility of ascending to power in Pakistan drove the more radical Islamic elements in the country to violence," Thompson said.
The former Tennessee senator said the Bhutto assassination was "part of a much larger picture."
"This is an international war we are engaged in," he emphasized. "Bhutto's assassination is not a law enforcement matter. This is a global conflict, and al-Qaida wants to bring Western civilization to its knees."

That’s BS about the “late entry”. That’s a cop-out. He got in months ago. The issue isn’t when he got in, but what he’s done (or hasn’t done) since then.
What he hasn’t done is campaigned vigorously or effectively.
Posting in bold doesn’t actually give your words any more weight.
It wasn't "Cold."
After rereading the link that was provided earlier it seems he should have used the word condolences rather than apologizes.
So after all that are you going to vote for Fred or not? I agree with most of what you said even though it is a backhanded endorsement. Also remember that your opinion is an advanced, idea driven and researched one. I have confidence that Fred is going to win the Joe Sixpacks of the world over just like W did. This is something that Willard and Rooty will have a tough time accomplishing.
The Bush Adm. was condemned last month for asking the NY Times to hold a story that they have been working behind the scenes to secure the nukes with the Musharraf govt. agreement.
He references it all the time. I'll make sure to have you pinged to each and every time it shows up, if you like.
“This is a global conflict, and al-Qaida wants to bring Western civilization to its knees.”
Bingo!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
With all the “slick” of Willy thrown in for good measure.
AQ is one tiny little cog in the Islamic machine. It is ISLAM that want's to destroy western civilisation. Hezb'Allah is a much bigger threat and always has been.
WW-IV
Everyone says this but when was WW III???? I am afraid I missed it. lol.
Months ago, when others were at it a year ago. I agree his campaign hasn't been effective, had he hit the ground running he might be in a different position, but the wisdom of a late entry like Thompson's, and advocated by Gingrich, or a years long perpetual campaign like Rudy or McCain or Hillary, is a question candidates will be asking themselves four years from now. Personally, I think he's had enough time.
I’ve watched the debates Fred has participated in, and so far I can’t recall once him mentioning he was an advisor to the State Department on terrorism and nuclear proliferation.
If I have to be pinged just to find out about it, then certainly your average GOP primary voter isn’t going to have heard. My main concern is him getting the word out to the masses who will be choosing the GOP nominee. I think it’s the sort of thing that could make or break the race for him.
If you'd like to be on the Fred ping list let me or Politicalmom know.
This horrible event in Pakistian reminds us Americans that we are still in a global world war. At least Fred “gets it. “
The Cold War was thought to be the real WWIII.
1946-1989.
Slept thru the 50’s, 60’s, 70’s, and 80’s huh?
Or worse, Mussharaf could be next and then there is no stoping the Islamofacists from having a bomb already.
