'TIS the season: What better time than Christmas for an all-out war between Christian conservatives and the rest of the Republican Party?
The Evangelical insurgency of the Mike Huckabee campaign having spooked the GOP establishment into counterattacking with a vengeance, the former Arkansas governor has a plan to keep the Huckmentum rolling: Play the victim card. Hard.
"There is a level of elitism that has existed," Huckabee told the Christian Broadcasting Network's David Brody in an interview that ran yesterday. "People like me," he said - that is, "Evangelicals" and people "from the middle of America" - are expected to "come to the rallies and stand in lines for hours to cheer on the candidates . . . but when they got elected, behind closed doors, they would laugh at us and speak with scorn.
"It's OK if you guys get a seat on the bus," he added, mocking the tone of the country-clubbers against whom he aims to incite the pitchfork-wielding mob's rage. "But don't ever think about telling us where the bus is going to go."
It's a common complaint of the religious right. At the risk of agreeing with Huckabee (a despicable peddler of class warfare and various forms of bigotry), on this count he is without a doubt correct.
The relationship between the GOP and the Religious Right has grown dysfunctional, bordering on abusive. Take, for instance, 2004: The White House political machine couldn't feed the Evangelical base enough red meat on gay marriage and the evil judges out to force red-blooded Americans' sons to marry each other. Then came Election Day - and the Federal Marriage Amendment was never heard from again.

I want a cut of Ryan Sagers book sales for unintentionally pimping his book. It was great reading and everyone here knows why. Somebody had to say it.

"Introducing first, to my right, fighting out of the red corner, wearing their Sunday best with a gold crucifix...weighing in at 810 and 1/4 pounds...the social conservatives, the religious right, the champions of family values...from the Southern States...The Evangelicals!" (wild applause)
"And in the blue corner, wearing an off the rack suit, Goldwater 64 lapel pin and a belt 2 sizes too small...weighing in at 141 pounds soaking wet...the fiscal conservatives, the last champions of limited government...from the Western States...The Libertarians!" (wild applause)
Chapter 1: Live From the Reagan Building
Here in Georgia, we call Huckabee, “Jimmy Carter in Repubilican clothing.”
Thats not real funny and neither is Huckabee.
BINGO!
I am endorsing Fred Thompson for President. He is the only one who can bring the fiscal, social, limited government and national defense coalition together.
Fred is like the classic Porsche commercial...THERE IS NO SUBSTITUTE. By process of elimination he is the only option for conservatives.
At some point the fans of the three candidates who appeal to only one segment of the GOP base are going to have to get it drilled through their thick selfish skulls that you cant have your guy and expect the rest of the party to just shut up, bend over and vote for him. The do you want Hillary crap wont work.
Foreign policy hawks cant ram Rudy down our throats and expect socons to support him.
Socons cant ram Huck down our throats and expect libertarians to just shut up and vote for him.
Libertarians cant ram Ron Paul down peoples throats and expect national security voters to shut up and go along.
THIS IS A LIVE PRESS CONFERENCE.
I will be happy to take any questions.
Some of us are cautious but militant introverts. We feel uncomfortable saying......."RIGHT ON"!
My therapists are working really hard to get me out of my shell.
Welcome aboard!
I agree. Fred is the only realistic candidate who understands the true meaning of federalism, the limits placed on the federal govt by the constitution and is probably the closet conservatarian in the race.
Huckabee’s big government nanny-statism scares me. I also have trouble with his stand on evolution. You can oppose evolution on a scientific bases, but to just dismiss it based on faith is not good enough for me. I am proud that he is a man of faith, but one cannot substitute science with religion, rather they can go hand in hand.
Glad Rush exposed the Huckster today though, classic. God bless Rush. Check out Rush's web site to get the transcript:
http://www.rushlimbaugh.com/home/daily/site_122107/content/01125107.guest.htmlRush:" So Huckabee goes out and hires the DC-Manhattan axis campaign manager, who then starts ripping people like me for being part of the DC-Manhattan axis! I'm part of the Cape Girardeau-middle America axis. I grew up in Missouri! I think Rollins and his candidate need to stick to the issues. They need to stick to the record. They need to stop with this Clintonesque spinning that they're doing out there. You know, McCain's starting to look better to me than this guy -- and that's saying something! More I see what Huckster's -- Huckabee's (laughs) record was in Arkansas, there's a lot of liberalism in there. There certainly isn't a lot of Reaganism in there, and I think that the Huckabee campaign is trying to dumb down conservatism to comport with his record, and now they focus on me, challenging me on a personal level here like the libs do. I told you the other day, we had a caller that wanted to know what I thought of the Huckabee campaign. I said, "Look, I see a lot of Perot here in terms of the support that Huckabee has," and I remember back in 1992, I did everything I could. By the way, Ed Rollins worked for Perot, too. But let's go back. I said something I learned during the Perot campaign. I tried to warn people every day: "This guy is not who you think. He's not really serious about this. There's a vendetta or a something that's driving this, but he's not who you think he is. There's something about this that's not right."
The old money eastern Establishment country club Republicans stand for nothing. They have no values except they came over on the Mayflower and they are entitled to rule. Bush is one of them. These are the people Reagan was fighting. Reagan is gone, but the “Rockefeller wing” is still with us.
Uh, Mr. Blair, do you expect your endorsement to immediately send Fred Thompson’s prospects on Intrade to tank?
:p
(Just kidding. I love ya’, man....in a completely platonic, brother/sister way, of course. )
So which corner do we evangelical libertarians report to?
Yeah, Fred is the best representative of the GOP party core values. He is the only one of the front runners who can really bring it all together.
Drag $1000 through DC and you never know what will turn up.
Agree. Ann Coulter does a pretty good job in “Godless.”
I'm neither. Can I still play?
Grow up.
