In addition to raising auto fuel efficiency standards 40 percent, an energy bill passed by Congress yesterday bans the incandescent light bulb by 2014.
President Bush signed the 822-page measure into law today after it was sent up Pennsylvania Avenue in a Toyota Prius hybrid vehicle. The House passed the bill by a 314-100 vote after approval by the Senate last week.

just da*n, you are good! That's not just funny, but it would work!!!
I'm a writer and am writing a column on this boon-doggle - but it would make a fun novelette plot: Of course, it should be just one person who "accidentally" drops and breaks - even if they have to 'accidentally' step on them, during the 'confusion'. to break them.
Otherwise, they could be charged with terrorism, release of toxic waste and all - should be on carpet, that would have to be replaced...
The 'deliverer" should have a copy (or 2) of the readout on the bio-hazard instructions as to what to do if you break one of these little mercury bombs..that will give cover as to why they were here with the bulb: "To ask my rep. how they can support this "screw-you" bulb and make sure he/she is aware of this hazard per these instructions = and oh, before anyone touches these bulbs I broke - by accident - read his. You need to call the Bio-waste boys! You need to open a window and vacate the room! There's mercury vapor in the air..."
Yep. that would make a nice plot for a short story
ONCE AGAIN _ I am not the one that issued the elaborate steps to follow should you break one of these - it's issued by the state, under the rules of disposing of BIO-waste: note: underling added by me.

Per:
What if I accidentally break a fluorescent bulb in my home?
1.The most important thing to remember is to never use a vacuum . A standard vacuum will spread mercury containing dust throughout the area as well as potentially contaminating the vacuum. What you should do is:
Keep people and pets away from the breakage area so that the mercury in the powder inside the bulb is not accidentally tracked into other areas.
2. Ventilate the area by opening windows.
3. Wear appropriate personal protective equipment, such as rubber gloves, safety glasses, old clothing or coveralls, and a dust mask (if you have one) to keep bulb dust and glass from being inhaled.
4. Carefully remove the larger pieces and place them in a secure closed container, preferably a glass container with a metal screw top and gasket seal like a canning jar.
5. Next, begin collecting the smaller pieces and dust. You can use a disposable broom and dustpan or two stiff pieces of paper to scoop up pieces.
6. Put all material into the glass container. Pat the area with the sticky side of duct, packing or masking tape. Wipe the area with a damp cloth or paper towels to pick up fine particles
7. Put all waste and materials used to clean up the bulb in the glass container and label it Universal Waste - broken lamp.
8. Take the container for recycling as universal waste. To determine where your town has made arrangements for recycling of this type of waste, call your town office or check out the Maine Department of Environmental Protection website at [do a search for YOUR states rules on disposing hazardous waste...]
[in addition, the site says:} The next time you replace a bulb, consider putting a drop cloth on the floor so that any accidental breakage can be easily cleaned up.
...
I have posted the link over and over in answer those to you who are accusing me of making false statements - if you choose to ignore and label ME dishonest for simply citing the rules of disposing of this "UNIVERSAL WASTE" (there's a little phrase that should perk up your ears) I suggest you look in mirror - in addition, ,it's disheartening to ME that FREEPERS would ignore such information and accuse others of dishonesty...
YES!
I have been reading up on the research and development of LED's = and hoping they get them perfected and on the market before the powers that be in Washington shuts them down - like they have so many other beneficial products from sources that, evidently, forgot to stop and grease palms and pockets along the way.
The got rid of the Tucker Torpedo - light years ahead of the "Big Five" - because of this... and many of Tucker's innovations were delayed before being stolen by the Big Five...many innovations which are still standard in our vehicles today.
Again, those instructions do NOT say you need professional services which is why it cost that lady $2,000. The lady spent $2,000 on PROFESSIONAL CLEANUP for something she could have done for $5.00. Other newsgroups interviewed toxic waste cleanup groups and said it was NOT required for this. You are either being dishonest or stupid. You choose.
And, while I haven’t read the bill, I’d be willing to bet there are no incentives for increased oil production, just “conservation” and “alternative” energy sources. Idiots. When will Civil War II start?
Well guess its time for me to buy a vaccume device, and tungsten, and practice my glass blowing.
I’ll be damned I’m giving up Incandecent bulbs until viable replacements that I am satisfied with EXIST, not because Congress says I have to.

GE Buys themselves another Billion dollars in profits.
It was recommended she replace the rug - which you would also deduce from the instructions on the states own site - that would close a bit more than $5.00 -
In addition, I think it's beneath FR's standards to continually accuse someone of 'dishonesty' and now "dishonest or stupid"
For the other reading this, I refer you too the states list of steps to take if you break one of these bulbs - and to the story this poster continues to deride - I leave it to your own judgment if I am either or both "dishonest or stupid"

Excerpt: "In the daughters bedroom, the levels remained well below the 300 mark, except for near the carpet where the bulb broke. There the mercury levels spiked to 1,939 ng/m3. On a bag of toys that bulb fragments had landed on, the levels of mercury were 556 ng/m3.
Bridges was told by the specialist not to clean up the bulb and mercury powder by herself. He recommended the Clean Harbors Environmental Services branch in Hampden.
Clean Harbors gave Bridges a low-ball estimate of $2,000, based on what she described, to clean up the room properly. The work entailed removing anything with levels greater than 300 ng/m3, including the carpeting.
One month later, Bridges daughters bedroom remains sealed off with plastic to avoid any dust blowing around and to keep the familys pets from going in and out of the room.
Her daughter, Shayley, has to sleep downstairs in a full house that already consists of Bridges fiancé, her 71-year-old mother and her handicapped brother." (end of excerpt)
I find it interesting that the insurance co. won't pay as they they state: "mercury is considered a pollutant, like oil. "
Re the story in the Ellsworth American, as I previously posted, I live in the area and I am in the newspaper business...I might know a bit more than is presented?
When the lady in question first called the state for advice, they gave her the procedures as laid out in their web site. But after the story hit the press, and they were contacted, they back peddled fast and furious - who knows why, accept it seems the gov't wants to keep a low profile on "the Rest of the Story" as pertaining to what we are going to be faced with in the disposal/cleanup of these bulbs.
As for this poster who continues to insult me - do not post to me further. I have no interest in conversing with a closed mind.
NO WHERE does it state to replace the rug except by the professional clean up place she first contacted (who was glad to take her money). The Maine statutes nor federal regulations recommend or require replacing a rug. I will assume you are being dishonest because you do not appear stupid.
Not to mention, MILLIONS of people have CFLs. Why do you think this is the ONLY incident on this?
CAn a white-haired ole granny enlist?
My problem is that I was schooled back when we still had our Constitutional Rights - and were actually taught the Constitution and the Bill of Rights in school.
They are not today and now we are reaping the whirlwind of people who have been latently imprinted in school and society to accept the power coming from the top - even some FREEPERS seem to accept that...
Too many are upset and intend to stock up on regular bulbs, as do I, but don't seem to realize we have a RIGHT and a DUTY to stand up and demand this bill be struck down.
I posted a couple weeks ago on FR about this and warned this mandate would soon come down. Not many believed me. But we are merely following, like lambs to the slaughter, what has already been passed into law in other countries - like England - whose cut off dates are also 2012...curious? Not really. It's all tied into the crowd that is adamant on putting us, like in the US, under the rule of the UN.
Wake up, folks. This has MUCH more to do with than light bulbs alone.
WTF ?!
( What time does the revolution start ? )
The one we had in the building I worked in for almost 28 years, never had a toilet that would flush just once when you deposited something in it. Sometimes it would take two or even three times. I bugged the crap out of the folks in charge to get them to put in a new toiled and they STILL haven’t. Both my husband and I have a bathroom and there are many times when we can’t flush it down well, and I have a brand new one. I don’t want to go into detail about our potty problems but this one’s hard to figure out.
“The new CFL lighting colors are not different than a normal bulb. CFL costs and technology has come a long way in the last 5 years.”
You need to check your facts a little closer.
Light quality is rated by a term called CRI.
link.
“The color rendering of a light source describes that source’s ability to accurately render the colors of perceived objects - people and things. As a general rule, the higher a light source’s Color Rendering Index (CRI) number, the better the lamp will make things appear.
SP lamps have a CRI of 70+ making them better color rendering light sources than older standard fluorescent lamps. SPX lamps have a CRI of 80+ even better than SP lamps, an even higher color rendering with the same high efficiency. A second consideration in light source selection is the degree of visual “coolness” or “warmth” of the light source.”
What they don’t say is none of the CFL lamps make any deep red. They make a orange color. This is why retail stores don’t use CFL for displays because it is important for the deep red on models to stand out.
Most CFL lamps will be around 80 CRI but many cheaper ones will be 70 CRI. There is some 85 bulbs but they run at higher pressure and have a much shorter life and have lower efficiency.
To prove what you are talking about please post a link to any CFL lamp with a CRI over 90 that has a 3000 Keven or lower color temp. There is none.
There are millions of fixtures that will not allow for the larger size CFL lamps to fit and all the cheaper CFL lamps state that they are not to be mounted in enclosed fixtures. I have installed some in closed fixtures and they have failed.
I spent over $150 last year on CFL for my small house. In fact I have one running now as my main light. It is a special 42 watt (They say 150 watt =) I had to use a special shade to improve the light quality.
There is just so much wrong with this law. If they can ban the incandescent lamp what is to stop them from baning the dishwasher? The dryer?
I do believe we have the right to select any lamps we want to. What on earth can give the government the right to stop the sales of the incandescent lamp?
This may be the first lawsuit I have ever joined.
I bought my 42 watt lamps here.
http://www.1000bulbs.com/42-Watt-Compact-Fluorescents/32170/
This is not a cheep lamp. The $1.25 lamps your are talking about are low performance lamps.
42 watt CFLs are extreme overkill. I use 13 watt in most of my light fixtures and the light output after 20 seconds of being on is near identical to a 60 or 75 watt regular bulb. 42 watt CFLs are equiv to around 200 watt lightning, which 99% of homes do not need (although I’ll admit many do).
This is a diversion.
They're not really after our lightbulbs.
The people that hate this country are after our automobiles.
Once we are on foot or dependent upon public transportation, the battle for control is over.
It's scary how many people on this forum clamor for that, incrementally of course.
Who on this board is in favor of public transportation?
I think your right but the real scenario I see is concept of saving the planet is more important than individual rights or the rights granted in the constitution.
this is being taught to all the kids in school as we speak.
In my school district they had “World Peace Day” and they had all the kids dress up as endangered animals and dance and roll on the ground. This is in fourth grade. By the time they get out of 8th they will be ready to join All Gore army to “save the world”
We are loosing our kids and most of the mothers I talk to think it is just fine and the Dads are too busy making a buck.
It is so sad to see the first graders wave goodbye to there moms when they get dropped off in their SUV’s and by the time their kids get out of 8th grade they will be looking at there evil parents hurting the environment by driving such a evil thing.
I’m talking about real experience with bulbs, not CRI or whatever. The light in my house after the CFL is fully warm is equal or better than the old 60 watt ones I used. I don’t care what ‘rating’ you or anyone else put on it. If I had problems seeing or thought the lightning wasn’t equivilent, I assure you I would up my wattage of CFLs. Strangely, none of the several dozen people who have come over in the last few months have noticed a difference either.
