Iran: Two feminists charged with terrorism
Tehran, 18 Dec. (AKI) - Two Kurdish women's rights activists in Iran have been charged with taking part in terrorist activities.
The prosecutor in Sanandaj, in western Iran accused Ronak Safazadeh and Hana Abdi of being members of the Kurdish rebel group PJAK (Party of Free Life of Kurdistan).
The PJAK is allegedly linked to the Kurdistan Workers' Party (PKK) fighting the Turkish army.
The women were also charged with carrying out attacks at the headquarters of the justice ministry in Sanandaj and for being responsible for a car bomb in the city's Azadi Square. Sanandaj is the capital of Kordestan province, which has a substantial Kurdish population.
The two women were part of a nationwide campaign called "A million signatures for equality", which involved them collecting signatures in favour of changing the laws in Iran which they say discriminate against women.
They were arrested in Tehran as they were trying to collect the signatures for their campaign on the streets of the capital.
This is the first time that feminists in Iran have been charged with being part of an armed group. In the past, student leaders and journalists were accused of terrorist activities.
