.....oh they’ll fight all right; and they just may be successful for the following reasons:

1.Duke is the largest employer in Durham; a city with a huge black population....why would a black jury bite the hand that feed them?
2.Statements in the press from black Durham citizens indicate that they believe the girl really was raped....those folks will be in the jury pool.

Yes.

In many areas of the country, the jury system is broken, largely for reasons of racism and class warfare.

Further, this entire affair was fueled by Nifong’s correct perception of the racist climate that exists in Durham. Not to say he didn’t make a gross misjudgment in what he could ultimately get away with, but the entire thought that he could pull this off, was due to the fact that Durham is a racist cesspool.

No doubt they’ll fight the lawsuit. The problem they’re facing is that this was filed in Federal Court. There is no guarantee that the jury will be filled with local riffraff . And whoever the Federal Judge is will not allow too much shenanigans.

The suit was filed in Federal Court in Greensboro, NC, about an hour west of Durham. The vast majority of people in NC are NOT fans of Duke (HUGH understatement!!!). Only 15% of Duke’s students are from NC.

I grew up in Greensboro and I can safely assert that people in Greensboro see nothing attractive in the rest of Durham. In the black community, Greensboro has NC A&T University which is the arch-rival of Durham’s NC Central University. Both are about 90% black.

Smacking down Duke and Durham would be seen as high entertainment in dear old Greensboring.
