Devotion to God or country is fine. Devotion to God or country that will not suffer question or scrutiny is where there's potential for abuse.

That said is there anything stupider politically that you can imagine than attacking patriotism when our troops are in the field and in the same sentence attacking Christianity at Christmas?

I'm sorry, where's the "attack" on patriotism and religion? Please see the transcript snippet in post # 7; I didn't see where he said that patriotism and religion were synonymns for fascism. He's talking about Mike Huckabee's campaign tactics.

It would seem to me that it's only "politically stupid" if the majority of the audience is subject to fits of hypersensitivity and/or overreaction - it would be expected of them to categorize any remarks Ron Paul makes in that context. As evidenced.

RON PAUL: Well, I haven’t thought about it completely, but you know, it reminds me of what Sinclair, uh, Lewis once said, he said ‘when Fascism comes to this country, it will be wrapped in the flag, carrying a cross.’ I don’t know whether that’s a fair assessment or not, but you wonder about using a cross like he is the only Christian, or implying that subtly. So, uh, I don’t think I would ever use anything like that.

He quotes a socialist, athiest, and alcoholic in denigration of the flag and the cross when asked about Huckabee’s Christmas message. Sheesh. Are you an employee that has to pretend you don’t see the problem or that it’s a bone-headed move politically?
