The Daily News honors the legions of New Yorkers who have served from the start in Iraq and on the often-overlooked battlefields of Afghanistan.

Our soldiers have been making great successes all along.

Yes, the surge (i.e., fighting a war as it should be fought, with crushing numbers and power) is making it easier, but the real change is that you can’t possibly deny our successes now.

"Four back-breaking, soul-crushing, nation-rending years later, U.S. troops are at last scoring remarkable successes in Iraq..."

Huh? Four back-breaking, soul-crushing, nation-rending years??? You've got to be kidding, unless you're talking in the summer of 1864 about the Civil War. One of the problems of this "War on Terror", I prefer the Counter-Jihad, is that it has had almost no effect on the daily lives of Americans. We're fighting this war with our pinky fingers. In fact, I can understand the people, like John Edwards, who say the War on Terror is a bumper-sticker.

The US is conducting the war on two fronts, Afghanistan and Iraq. As an American, you can live your life, as if there were no war going on and an alarming number of Americans (almost all Democrats) have come to the conclusion, that this war is not necessary and that there is no threat. If you just watch the MSM, you'd come to that conclusion.

So, the idea that this war has been "back-breaking" and "soul-crushing" and "nation-rending" is insane. It has to be the opinion of someone from a parallel reality and not from our planet Earth. I blame Bush and the Republicans for not clearing delineating what this war is, what the threat is and why we need to fight this war with one goal: Victory!

Some interesting comments on this editorial:

1. The word "hero" has lost it's meaning. Another word that has vanished from the english language is "shame". A true "hero" is the guy that jumped on the subway tracks to save a life. Soldiers in Iraq are "mercenaries" not "heros" They joined. Nor are firefighters heros. They joined for a rewarding job and good pension. It's their job to save lives. The subway jumper stands alone. No comparison.

2. Thanks for a great article on the TRUTH of what our coragous men and women are doing, not only in Iraq and Afghanistan, but around the world. Imagine, a newspaper actually REPORTING what's going on instead of deducing all of the ins and outs and shades of grey of every situation like it was some peyote induced vision. Some times, things are just what they are. Even Bill Clintons' cigar is, sometimes, just a cigar.

3. My fiancee works for sanitation; he has a good city job and a good pension already. But he is also a Marine reservist, and he will be in Iraq for most of next year. So there goes your "good job and pension" theory. It's ironic how some people are risking their lives to secure the rights of others to sit behind their laptops and pass judgement on them. You want to see the word "shame" resurface in the English language? Well here you go: shame on you, for your disgusting lack of appreciation. I hope you enjoy your holiday, nice and warm and cozy at home while those men and women you call "mercenaries" spend theirs halfway around the world, away from their families and loved ones, with nothing but the company of their M16's and sleeping bags to keep them warm.

4. May God bless these American heros, and may the traitors and useless idiots of Al Queda who post their drivel here wise up or leave our wonderful country. Here's a hot tip for the nay-sayers. The terrorists that our fine men and women are fighting would cut off your head if you criticized jihadis in the manner you defame Americans.
