Huckabee took thousands in gifts, records show
London Guardian ^ | December 14, 2007 | Daniel Nasaw in Washington

· Presents belie humble image of former governor · Businessman was donor to presidential frontrunner

A $1,000 pair of cufflinks from a supporter, tens of thousands of dollars of clothing from a wealthy Little Rock businessman and thousands in gift certificates and cash from staff and appointees were among the lavish gifts given to Republican presidential candidate and unexpected frontrunner Mike Huckabee while he was governor of Arkansas.

The gifts fell within Arkansas's ethics rules but have raised questions among the governor's political opponents and ethics analysts at a time when scrutiny of the candidate is intensifying, and are at odds with the humble persona Huckabee has adopted on the campaign trail.

The more I learn about Huck, the less I like him.

And what is it about Arkansas politicians pointing fingers?

“The gifts fell within Arkansas’s ethics rules”

And we are all VERY aware of Arkansas ethics.

Huck taxes like a 'Rat. Spends like a 'Rat. Pardons like a 'Rat. Caters to illegals like a 'Rat.

Now we can add he gifts himself like a 'Rat.

What's not to love?

SNORT.

It is probably important to point out that the Guardian’s Washington Bureau broke this story. As the paper says:

A review of state records by the Guardian indicates that during his more than 10 years as governor, Huckabee received thousands of dollars in presents almost every year: gift certificates to sporting goods stores, clothing boutiques and Wal-Mart, a $3,695 pair of cowboy boots, a $500 belt and more.

In addition, some former Huckabee staff and appointees acknowledged to the Guardian that Huckabee’s chief of staff and a cabinet official solicited contributions from staff and appointees for Christmas gifts for the governor.

This is a smear job. It only matters these days if he is found with a live boy or dead woman. Nobody is perfect and these accusations are laughable.

"And we are all VERY aware of Arkansas ethics."

Yup, the lack thereof.

I’m sorry but I strongly disagree. I don’t want anyone in public office accepting gifts of a personal nature. It is a corrupting practice. These people are public servants. If they wish to enrich themselves, go into another line of work. Politicians wield too much power to be accepting gifts.

Folks should always consider the source :)

That said....

...some former Huckabee staff and appointees acknowledged to the Guardian that Huckabee’s chief of staff and a cabinet official solicited contributions from staff and appointees for Christmas gifts for the governor.

...kinda hard to put any other interpretation on that.

But it's a hoot that this in The Guardian :)

Absolutely. Nobody gives you $10,000 cuff links and doesn’t expect a favor.

Are you snowed in? I hope you and yours are doing well, in spite of all that white stuff. There’s one thing for sure, Huck-a-billy hasn’t said he’d tax the snow, yet!

All the same, these are personal attacks of dubious importance. Planting the seeds of doubt you are. Good plan if can’t debate the issues.

I’d be happy to debate the issues. Huck is a tax-and-spender, who now supports the “Fair Tax” concept. The Fair Tax idea is flawed on a number of bases, the largest one being that the tax base is insufficient to replace current federal revenues. It also has the government — federal, state and local — paying taxes on its purchases, a necessity if the Fair Taxers are to reach their revenue goals. It of course ignores the fact that more revenue would then be needed to pay these taxes. Ridiculous.

Huck debates the issues? IMO, he just flips & flops and then plagerizes some conservative boiler plate. The Huck needs to be encouraged to get out of the race.

Mr. Greek: You have made it clear you are against Huckabee; an incompetant, corrupt and disingenuous politician. I am shocked. What do we do? WHO will save us?!?!?

I agree. Greed is not a Christian value.

This is a smear job.

But a valid one. While what he took may be legal, it shows a very greedy side to him that I wouldn't like to see in a President, particularly one that keeps invoking the name of Jesus. (Such greed certainly does not reflect well on the Lord of whom Huck speaks.)
