In 1995, while battling a house fire, Don Herbert was trapped under a pile of debris when the roof collapsed. In a coma by the time he reached the hospital, he regained consciousness but slipped back into a coma-like state a few months later. He spent the next ten years in a nursing home, receiving nourishment through a feeding tube and apparently in a vegetative state.
