COLORADO SPRINGS, Colorado (CNN) -- A Colorado Springs megachurch instituted security precautions after a shooting at a Denver area mission center earlier Sunday, saving "hundreds of lives" at the New Life Church, senior Pastor Brady Boyd said Monday.
A New Life parishioner acting as a security guard shot and killed a gunman who entered the church Sunday afternoon after he had gotten no more than 50 feet inside the building, Boyd said.
...
Boyd said the female security guard was a hero in preventing further bloodshed, rushing to confront the gunman just inside the church.
"She probably saved over a hundred lives," Boyd said of the guard, whom he said is not a law enforcement officer and used her personal weapon.
...
"Hundreds of lives were saved yesterday because of the plan that was put in place," said Boyd, who put the number of people on the church campus at the time as 7,000.

“I wish some other Colorado law enforcement would have had her desire to save lives around 8 years ago.”
I think some of them wanted to but were trained to follow orders. Either that or they didn’t want to risk their pensions.
“Or those macho, posturing, SWAT types in Blacksburg, VA eight months ago...”
You have no idea what you’re talking about.
“I really don’t understand this trend in this country to hail people as heroes for doing the job they were hired to do.”
In most cases I would agree with you. But she was outgunned by some joker wearing body armor (if the reports are to be believed). Rushing him and taking him down took guts as well as skill with a pistol. Had she missed (by that I mean a small target not covered by helmet or vest), she’d probably be dead.
Assuming the facts are as I described them from the reports I have heard, I’d say she could rightly be called a hero.
I’ve known plenty of security guards who would have turned tail against those odds with the justification “they don’t pay me enough.”
“Sounds like the Founding Fathers had it right again.”
Big time!!!
Still a good call. I guess they would have to be crazy not to. But look at the mall this week. Security unarmed.
Matthew Murray, eh? Is he for sure dead? There seem to be many unconfirmed aspects to this case.
Word is that the female security guard is a brunette. :)
More guns, less crime.
Spot on. Well said.
So much for turning the other cheek, though. Perhaps a deeper look into the scripture would show it was not a call for suicide. This could be the start of something interesting. Kudos to the security guard for doing the right thing.
I'd agree with that, but did he have an automatic?
Thanks for the thread. She needs our prayers...I hope she has peace of mind, and pray that She is doing well.
I didn’t think Muslims wore skullcaps. Jewish people do, but that wouldn’t make any sense at all. Maybe it was just a beanie.
Nice, albeit large, housing development.
Home-schooled. This will be spun badly.
“about 40 shots were fired in all.” Interesting.
A person carrying a personal weapon killed a potential mass murderer that had already killed someone someplace else.? Wonder how this will be spun by the anti-Constitution wackos?
On a sad note, the last time I checked NC CCW laws it would be illegal for me to be in a church with my Glock. Same for a movie theater or any spectator sport. Not to mention any restaurant that sells alcohol of any kind. So I guess the anti-Constitution crowd still has plenty to hope for as there are many free fire zones, including schools, for the bad guys to operate.
I didnt find anyone....facebook members usually have a life....

Update at 2:06 p.m. ET: Local news organizations are reporting that the gunman has been identified as Matthew Murray. None of the reports cite a verifiable source for this information.
CNN says he worked on a mission with the first group that was targeted during yesterday’s shooting sprees. The all-news station says he was carrying some 500 rounds of ammunition.
“Murray was home schooled and his last known address was at his parents’ home in unincorporated Arapahoe County the same home investigators searched Sunday night,” KUSA-TV reports on its website.
Reports of a rifle and 500 rounds.
Doesn’t take an “automatic” to make that level of damage; semi-auto is actually likely more dangerous.
Johnny Sutton is going to jail her?
Thank you for that informed, thoughtful, incisive, reasoned contribution to the discussion.
For the same reason we don't sell all of our possessions and give them to the poor.
