Agree; surely 'family' environment is a big part here. Funny, how little they really disclose about these perps. . .their life stories, really. Their likes/dislikes; interests etc./et al. . .
Think as well, today, Liberalism/PC makes it even harder for young men to 'define' themselves. We are 'growing' students, who are unchallenged. Without real heroes - authentic, real or mythic; without benefit of real competition; and 'scores' while on the playing field; be it organized sports or recess. In their classrooms; they are without 'real grades - and so no honest intellectual competition as well. (Even school Valedictorians are becoming an 'acheivement threat' to another students ego. . .)
In many homes; there is no 'real' Father either. That 'boys will be boys' is no longer tolerated. No rough play; no 'play guns'. . .Their 'real' competition is supplanted by the safe. . .and inauthentic, 'virtual realities'.
Anyway, fewer tests of their 'boyness' - soon to be 'manness'. Fewer challenges; and meantime, the growing wells of testosterone become threatening; particularly, as you say. . .for those children, in less than ideal situations.
These kids are living an 'inauthentic' childhood. At some point; they want and require 'real' tests of who they are; at least beyond the relativity of the 'egalitarian playing field' and beond the challenges - and false confirmations - of a video game.
Think in the end; sadly, the most troubled of these boys, looks for a reality they can actually feel if only by their own violent impact. They confirm the pain of emptiness; of lving a life where no test or challenge has defined in authentic terms; 'who they are' and by turn, 'who they can be'. . .
I think you’re right. Good post, cricket!
