Slovak PM warns against unilaterally declared independence for Kosovo

BRUSSELS, Belgium -- Slovakia's prime minister said Tuesday it was "hard to imagine" his country would recognize Kosovo if the breakaway Serbian province declares its independence unilaterally.

Kosovo has vowed to do so in the coming months if the U.N. Security Council does not sign off on statehood, repeatedly saying it would not consider any other alternative.

"It's hard for us to imagine that we would recognize a Kosovo that unilaterally declares itself independent," Robert Fico said after meetings European Commission President Jose Manuel Barroso.

Although it is formally a part of Serbia, Kosovo has been run by the U.N. since 1999, when NATO airstrikes ended a bloody crackdown by Serbian forces on ethnic Albanian separatists.

International mediators overseeing talks on the future status of the province are due to report to U.N. Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon by Dec. 10. Talks between independence-seeking ethnic Albanians and Serbs bent on keeping the province have reached a dead end.

The European Union is not united on the issue: Hungary, Greece, Spain, Slovakia, Cyprus and Romania are fearful that independence for the province could awaken separatists elsewhere in Europe.

The United States - which favors independence for Kosovo - has indicated that it may recognize a unilateral declaration of independence if the Kosovo Albanians press ahead with their own state. Russia, meanwhile, disagrees with any plan that does not have Serbia's support.

Fico called for EU unity on the issue, warning it would be a "grave mistake" if the bloc failed to reach a consensus on how to proceed.

"It would be a sign of weakness. I have a feeling some superpowers are already counting on that," he said, without giving any details.

Barroso said it would be "difficult to explain" to others that EU countries are unable to reach a common position on a European issue.

This is more about Fico’s kowtowing to Moscow than emboldening ethnic separatist movements elsewhere in Europe. Note his reference to “superpowers” and calling for EU unity - both reveal his anti-US stripes.

Fico is a closet bolshevik who waxes nostalgic about the good ol’days of the Warsaw Pact.

"You would rather he kowtow to Albanian terrorists?"

Gee, I dunno. They got nuclear weapons and a stranglehold on a big share of Europe's energy resources? Are they trying to push the rest of eastern Europe around with mafia-like tactics? How many Albanian terrorists commit political assassinations, using stuff like radioactive polonium?

Sure the Albanians (KLA) are terrorists and we should never have gotten this close to them. But they don't advocate ethnic cleansing and genocide to advance their agenda. The Serbs under Milosevic did, many in the current Serbian government supported it and, come to think of it, so have the Russians over the past century.

Are you insane? The terror campaign against the Serb, Jew, and Roma population in Kosovo by the Muslims, who were illegal immigrants from Albania, was documented by the New York Times, for God's sake, back in the 1980's!

The only thing the Serbs can be accused of is fighting them at the Jihadists own level, and WINNING until we bombed them to advance the Jihad.

Their success in stealing Serbian lands is being watched by the Mexican illegals in our Southwest, what they call Aztlan.

I may be insane, but not unaware of the difference between terrorism - which I already stated the KLA are guilty of- and genocide and ethnic cleansing. Please take some time to think about and understand this difference.

The Albanian majority in Kosovo got that way largely by out-populating the Serbs in Kosovo, not by murdering Serbs (before you have another hissy fit, understand I acknowledge they did commit terrorist-style murders).

My point is not to debate whether Serbs or Albanians are bad guys - it’s to make the point that there are some so-called leaders in Eastern Europe who have not given up their Communist sympathies. Sheesh!

Which was only accomplished by a huge program of illegal immigration into Kosovo as the Albanian economy collapsed combined with a sustained campaign of rape, murder, and terror committed against the Serb, Jew, and Roma populations of Kosovo.

For any civilized person, this sort of action cannot be tolerated.
