A friend of my family was robbed a bunch of times some years ago, so he made a rule - every night he put his wallet, Rolex, and Mercedes car keys on the entrance hall table. He figured if thieves broke in, took the stuff on the hall table, and then started up the stairs, they were a clear danger to his family and he’d shoot the intruders, no questions asked.

Either that, or the thieves thought: "We're not in this house two seconds, and look what we found already. Imagine the stuff that must be laying around in the other rooms!"

"...every night he put his wallet, Rolex, and Mercedes car keys on the entrance hall table.

This is the "understanding", (arrangement) in much of the third world. I worked in Africa for a couple of years and when you rent a house in the city I was working out of, the first thing the owner shows you is the "safe haven" room. This room or bedrooms are almost always on the second floor and are protected by a substantial iron door located at the top of the stairs that can be locked from the INSIDE. The idea is that when the theives are downstairs rifling through the valuables, the owner doesn't confront them and the bad guys don't try to breach the safe haven door. You just cower and hope everyone has bought in to the implied agreement. Interestingly, most of these homes also have an "askari" outside guarding the home...he is usually involved in the burglary as well.
