I’ve come to the conclusion that the only way to eliminate the drug trade is to eliminate the demand, literally.

Addicts get two chances to clean up. The first is kindly, the second is harsh. The third time they are arrested it is a capital offence crime.

Kill the demand, cure the supply.

You are completely off-base here.

The problem is not the drugs. The problem is the money associated with the drugs.

Because they are illegal, the price is artificially inflated well beyond their production cost. This provides huge economic incentives to smuggle, deal and push drugs.

Switch to a system where "if you can pronounce it, you can buy it at the local pharmacy" and you will starve most of the really bad actors out of existence.

Meth is a particularly bad drug, in that it is hard on the body, but if both meth and coke were legal, coke would be by far the preferred drug. Coke isn't easy on the body, but it is a lot better than meth.

My sister and her shack-up stud were both addicts. They have never shaken the habit completely. Both are on SSI. We the taxpayer pay for these two miserable excuses for human beings.

If drugs were legal, it would be possible for these two people to both feed their habits and live a modest life on the income from two menial jobs, which is all they would be really qualified for.

This sounds a lot more humane than your proposal, and they could serve as living examples of why drugs are bad for you.

Remove the financial incentives through legalization, and our drug problem will become manageable almost overnight, and it will diminish over time.

This nation is deeply in debt and has daily incursions over our southern border by the Mexican army protecting drug cartel shipments into our nation - and you blather about being humane!

There is a point where liberal platitudes become absurd. Being humane to drug addicts is not one of them. People deserve a chance to get out of drug addiction and I’ve already stated that I support that to a certain extent, but not for decades. The fact that they want to stay stoned, or slowly kill themselves with heroin or cocaine or meth, might on the surface seem to be a private choice. But it is, in fact, one that has a huge cost, not only on the addict’s family but on public safety and on the nation’s culture in general.

I refuse to be part of a support system for druggies. As I’ve already stated, providing a drug addict with an opportunity to get clean and sober through treatment is a good first start. Backsliding occurrs, but a stiffer treatment the second time around - going cold turkey and serving a three-year prison sentence - sounds about right and could be the way for many if not most to go clean for the rest of their lives. Particularly since on the third strike the result would be capital punishment.

Enough is enough.

Which section of Disneyland do you live in?

I’ve worked with addicts & alcoholics for more than 20 years. If they obtain abstinence & enter recovery as a lifestyle choice, they tend to do well. If they don’t, they tend to die. Usually, from illnesses that are caused by abuse & neglect, and usually way too young.
