The Old Testament describes its enormous powers—blazing with fire and light, halting rivers, blasting away armies and bringing down the fabled walls of Jericho.

Hate to break the news, but the ark in and of itself is/was just a gilded wooden box. Any power associated with it was due to the fact that it represented the presence of God among His people. The power was God's, not the ark's.

You get partial credit. The Ark was made of three large boxes that fit inside each other. The outer and inner boxes were made of solid gold. The third box went between them and was made of acacia wood. You are correct that it's power, like all power, came exclusively from G-d. One can debate as to whether the Ark, once endowed with the extraordinary power told in the Bible, retains that power in all circumstances or whether it is dependent on its placement in the Holy Temple and the ministrations of the Priests. Way above my pay grade.

Some would consider this semantics, given that a number of events are described which clearly relied on the Ark being present.
