I have a couple friends with atrial fib, and if I’m not mistaken, their pacemakers do a sort of defib when the heart is beating erratically.

I know Cheney has a pacemaker, maybe not the defib type?

I’m not sure what type of pacemaker Cheney has either, if it’s one to monitor irregular heartbeats (and then maybe only -life-threatening ones) or just the regular standard ones that looks for an absence of any heartbeat. My hubby doesn’t have a pacemeaker, he only gets these bouts once a year or so, so they’ve just been treating him medically.

other way around. The implanted defibrillator fires for ventricular arryhthmias. if the heart rate speeds up enough from the a fib the defibrillator could be “tricked” into firing, but normally one would not expect it to fire with a fib. Sounds like it is working appropriately to me.
