The essay was long enough, my point was Islamism didn't start because of what some would call - American Imperialism - !
If I had searched, I bet I would find that there was never any time in history when Radical Muslims wouldn't have wanted to kill schoolteachers for naming a teddy bear Mohammad.

Well, for about 250 yrs before that, there were the Fatimids. Pretty decent bunch, for muslims. It was a difficult era to be decent in, no matter what your religion. I think they died out in the mid-1100's, or shortly after the Crusades began in earnest. Probably just ran out of steam in the typical way, though.

If you’re asking what happened during those 600 years, there was the invasion of Spain, several attempts to control the Mediterranean Sea and the islands therein, endless attacks on the Byzantines, the invasion of India, and the systematic control of the Christian centers of culture in the Middle East. The Islamic people of North Africa also institutionalized the slave trade across the Sahara Desert at the time. Of course, there were the Crusades. We can thank the Byzantines for stopping the Moslems where they were so Europe could essentially wallow in their filth until they pulled themselves back together. You are of course correct that the jihadi impulses and tactics seen today had their genesis at the start of the religion itself and how it initially spread.
