Celebrities flee, homes gutted as wildfire ravages Malibu Nov 24 05:47 PM US/Eastern Hollywood stars were among nearly 10,000 people forced to flee as wind-driven wildfires tore through the celebrity enclave of Malibu on Saturday, gutting at least 35 multi-million dollar homes and threatening hundreds more, officials and reports said.

Fires erupted at around 3:30 am (1130 GMT) officials said, spreading rapidly through tinder-dry brush as winds packing gusts of up to 50 mph fanned the inferno, the second major blaze to hit Malibu in the space of a month.

By 10:30 am (1830 GMT), around 2,200 acres had been scorched as the flames burned unchecked, Los Angeles County Fire Department officials said.

Around 1,700 firefighters had been deployed to tackle the fires, backed up by 23 aircraft including water-dropping helicopters and a DC-10 which was pummeling the infernos with flame retardant.

Los Angeles County Supervisor Zev Yaroslavsky told a press conference 10,000 residents had been evacuated. Only one injury had been reported so far, a firefighter who received burns which were not thought serious, he added.

Local media reports said actors Matthew McConaughey and Minnie Driver were among those forced to evacuate while Red Hot Chili Peppers bass guitarist Flea's home was destroyed by the flames.

Yaroslavsky said winds blowing across the region had begun to ease later Saturday, offering encouragement to firefighters. However he warned the situation could change rapidly.

"It's a very dynamic and dangerous situation," he told reporters. "The winds have died down but we need to caution everyone that winds can start again in a hurry. It does not mean people are out of danger.

I don’t have any problems, only the occasional irritation, like self-righteous fools of your kind.

"One thing, though...I believe the first pic was taken in Colorado during their horrific fires some years ago. I know I’ve seen it before. ;o)"

Now that makes more sense. Those trees didn't match So. Cal at all.

Who’s the patron saint of Celebrities, so we can all join in a prayer to him or her?

I didn’t mean to go off on you. I like you, everyone likes you. We just differ perhaps on attribution of causes of fires like this. The other poster was making baseless accusations.

Who are you guys to lump all of us into one pot?

You might want to get more of an education before your hurl indiscriminate stones at the state that feeds so many of you.

BTW: FreeRepublic is brought to you from the center of CALIFORNIA.

The fall of 1989 we had a significant amount of time with no rain. The grass and the woods were very dry and the pyromaniacs went berserk. One fire went 30 miles in one direction before it was brought under control. Another fire came within 200 yards of my house. I had a tractor hooked up to a disk so I could tear up the ground around my house and barn so the fire couldn’t spread on the grass. When the conditions get like this I have my tractor fueled and the disk hooked up.There are things a homeowner can do to be proactive for environmental disasters.

Those are amazing pictures! Those of us who have never experienced wildfires can only guess what it must be like to see those flames engulfing one’s home or to see them sweeping down a hillside and through a neighborhood, hoping and praying they don’t make it to your own house.

Thoughts and prayers go out to those enduring this horror right now.

Here in NC our biggest enemy right now is our extreme drought. We missed our usual balance this summer of a hurricane or tropical storm...which, as horrible as those are, they do replenish our area’s rainfall.

So will pray for rain there in California as I’ve been praying for rain here in NC.

His alma matter was beaten by the Texas A&M Aggies (aka the Fighting Farmers) yesterday.

I watched the game to the end and it looked like to me that UT made a field goal in the last 9 seconds of the game and won 26 t 24 over TAMU. Did I miss something?

One of the reasons those outside the U.S. don't like us, is for this very reason you are demonstrating. People can't look at wealth and say, "Good for them."

Don't be fooled; there's a large contingent of folks on this site that are every bit as resentful of "the rich" and "the wealthy" as the most hard-core Leftist/Democrat/Hillary-ite you can imagine. Just visit some of the "mortgage meltdown", "inflation", or "consumerism/religion" threads for proof.

I guess for some it might be fun to laugh at Malibu homeowners and landowners. I am one of them, and I am hurting.

I'm just over the Santa Monica Mountains from you and the Santa Anas have calmed here -- hope they're quiet where you are. Best of luck. There are few things as frightening as going to bed not knowing whether you'll have to evacuate your home before morning.

Don't be troubled by stupid, clueless, small-minded posters. Their numbers have increased here lately but they're not worth the energy spent responding to them.

I have made deliveries to Minnie Driver at the trailer park in Malibu. Those trailers are really neat...made up to look very houselike and sort of european or something.

Oh, I hope not.....

Somehow I can’t see Sandra Bullock, Ashley Judd and Penelope Cruz as ‘beards’.
