“Media reports.”

The media is pushing for a repeat of 1996, when hundreds of thousands of ineligible applicants for citizenship were naturalized, without the most cursory of background checks, just in time for the general election, and just in time to vote for the party Gore, who pushed the INS effort, hoped they would. Later, of course, the naturalizations were reversed, worsening an already bad INS backlog.

Those who don’t learn from history....
