Why Won't Congress Drill for Oil?

RUSH: Here's to phones. We start with Denver, Colorado, today, on the EIB Network. Bill, nice to have you on the program. Welcome.

CALLER: Rush, how are you? I'm really upset about the hundred dollar-price of oil, and isn't it about time we put enough pressure on Congress to approve offshore drilling and ANWR. We have so much oil, the oil could be so much less and we wouldn't have to pay at this time.

RUSH: People have been trying to put pressure on Congress to drill for oil, and Democrats are not going to go for it. The Democrats are beholden to the environmentalist wackos, it's going to take a price a little bit higher than this for that to happen.

If the replenishment rate is lower than our usage rate, then it doesn't matter much

True, and what the drill our way out of it and the other alternative source people don't understand, is that we have to do both, given the number of Chinese and other people around the world that don't own cars. Demand will continue to climb, and prices will go higher. Look how thirty million illegals in our country has increased demand, and lots of them don't drive.

If we drilled in America (significantly), wouldn’t we also have to decide whether to restrict the consumption to America, or not? And would this decision be based on the market value of the oil, or on the political matter of energy independence? What if the oil companies didn’t want to restrict themselves to domestic sales?
One good (bad) Dem president and we’re looking at nationalization. :(

“Even the republican Congress wouldn’t permit drilling in a God forsaken wasteland at the top of the world, based on environmental concerns”

Not so. ANWR had the votes to pass even when there was a Dim majority. Problem is, it takes 60 votes to overcome a filibuster

Why Won't Congress Drill for Oil?

Because we're using up their cheap oil first - and saving our more expensive oil for a real crisis.

the states where the oil is tax the crap out of it to where it about defeats the purpose, in a redistribution-of-wealth kind of way...Maybe we need to invoke the Interstate Commerce Clause

Well there you are. I don't trust the Congress to do anything smarter than their own "redistribution of wealth" program: nationalize the oil industry.

Not to say we shouldn't become energy independent, and drill the livin' daylights out of every oil deposit possible, but the politicians will quickly find a way to foul it up.

they won’t allow drilling because they are making millions not drilling.

“given the number of Chinese and other people around the world that don’t own cars”

Where’d you get the idea chinese don’t own cars? In 1972 when Nixon visited Bejing, the city was awash with folks on bicycles. Bicycles are outlawed in Bejing today.

yeah. i heard part of rush’s dialogue while driving yesterday.

i used to listen to bill wattenberg of radio kgo san fran in the 1990’s down here in socal,

and he’d scream his head off about the cal epa bureaucrats and oil co bureaucrats

exchanging jobs, each time for pay raises.

it’s gridlock, politically.

Personally I don’t want Congress drilling for oil.

Oh heck, make 'em all roustabouts. Get 'em out on tour in the North Slope.

Let 'em find out what work really is, and what the oil business is like.

Well, if you believe there is a finite amount of oil, you may be right but what if the theory that the earth replenishes oil is the correct one? Bingo! Between the proven reserves being underestimated by a factor of about ten and the difficult of extracting domestic oil overestimated by a factor of about two, libs and other commies have plenty of excuses as to why we can't take care of our own house!

IN the end it may be better to use the oil from the middle east first. When it’s gone... they are back to eating sand. We have plenty of oil reserves in the continental US, offshore and in Alaska. If we use them up first...we’re dead.

In my part of the woods where there has been oil and gas drilling for as long as I can remember, those in the oil business all tell me that is the unspoken wisdom from Washington.

Yep, once they take over we can't get them out of it. We,re still paying heavily for FDR's misadventures in farming subsidies.

If a Dem gets the Whitehouse, they will authorize drilling in a matter of days because then, they believe, they will get all the credit when the prices stabilize.

I think the current figure is that only about 20 to 25% of the Chinese own cars. But you can go look it up if you like. Also something like 60% don’t have utilities in their homes. Etc. The most of china is a very undeveloped place.

I’ve been wondering the same question. I’m tired of paying the Saudis $3.20 a gallon. We need to drill within our own borders to decrease some of that reliance on foreign oil.

Should have added that I was watching a dicover special about china, last month, they just got their first Mickey-d’s this year. They had to put one of the employees on the street to show the drivers how to go through the drive up windows. the customers would drive through and get their food , then they would park and go inside to eat. LOL
