Paul Weyrich Comes Unglued
RedState ^ | Erik

Posted on 11/14/2007 8:45:14 AM PST by jaybeegee

I feel comfortable saying, based on conversations with NRLC members, that Jim Bopp's attack on Sam Brownback did not help the Romney team with the NRLC.

Paul Weyrich coming unglued and accusing Thompson of bribing NRLC for their endorsement is really not going to help Romney at the grassroots level.

Weyrich can say what he wants, but (a) it's not true and (b) it's not helpful. I would suggest that if they don't think Thompson is a threat, the Romney camp might not want to get bogged down on this. The latest poll numbers in Iowa and South Carolina are certainly not painting a pretty picture for the Thompson camp. But, this endorsement just might help.

[UPDATED:] I just got this punch thrown from the Thompson campaign into my inbox:

"Gov. Romney is new to the pro-life movement and his campaign clearly has a few things to learn about it. First, they should understand that despite their campaign's every effort, groups like the National Right to Life Committee's PAC (NLRC-PAC) cannot be bought. NLRC-PAC is supporting Fred Thompson because of Fred's 100% pro-life voting record. They know he stood with them yesterday, he stands with them today, and he will stand with them tomorrow. It is unseemly for the Romney campaign and its supporters to suggest that NLRC-PAC's coveted endorsement is based on a bribe. Second, this unfounded accusation is as outrageou s as it is ironic, given the Romney campaign's long history of spreading money around to anyone who will take it."

Wow, you can tell an election is in the air, things are getting a little nutty.

It's not for a FREAKIN' YEAR !!!

Lots of things can happen in a year, and probably will.

Iowa cannot come soon enough, we REpublicans and Conservatives need to gell around a single candidate or not, all of this infighting is not helping us with the Harpy as well as the Senate races that we must win.

“To compare employees of giant businesses to dedicated volunteer activists, that join an organization to further a political or moral cause, s ridiculous.”

What is more ridiculous is thinking that the Union employees could give a fig less about who the CEO of a corp is voting for...lol

My previous personal interaction with Mr. Weyrich was consistent with this virulent attitude he is showing. One interaction was enough to last me a lifetime.

You don't need to have personal interactions. I got the impression from reading this article, written after Ronald Reagan's death. I found it to be in horrible taste to dwell on Reagan's personal flaws only 11 days after his death.

Yours is the better point for the FED-EX post.

Having always refused to join a union, I overlooked the fact that FED-EX employees would actually be aware of mgmt politicking and would be in opposition to it’s efforts.

An even better clarification than mine.

It has been my experience over the years that even non union employees didn’t much care about their boss’s opinion on who to vote for.

That’s right, and most people don’t give a rip about any endorsement period!

I fear that Paul Weyrich, (formerly of Milwaukee, WI) is losing his marbles.

That happens at a certain, ahhh, delicate age...

You got it. This was the endorsement everyone was waiting for and Fred garnered it. It is appreciated and will be to our advantage.

“Only Fed Ex pilots and I think one city somewhere in the North are union.”

Assuming that is correct, then post 55 is the better answer.

Read number 30 a little more carefully and in context.

Apparently sarcasm is new to you.

I'll respond. I'm not expecting much reason or logic in return, so feel free to surprise me.

1) Millions of supporters were not polled. My point, quiet simply, is that as an organization with a singular issue focus that is voluntary, whose decision was not made by it's 'membership' (it doesn't have members, it has a mailing list), cannot 'deliver' pro-life voters. These people will make up their own mind. As a strict pro-life voter, I am not persuaded. Neither are a majority of the pro-life voters in NH or IA, a plurality of both overwhelmingly back Romney.

2) The NRLC is not the NRA. The NRA endorsement CAN push it's members more effectively than the NRLC can push it's mailing list. This is old hat for them. But both the NRLC and NRA grasstop leadership has already been picked up by the various campaigns anyway (and his late entry hurts FDT here). This isn't like a labor union endorsement which is a BIG deal in the D primary.

3) The NRLC PAC did the endorsement. Federal law limits them to around a 5k check.

4)

4) I've done enough survey research to know that, to individuals in the first five states or so, being told that a national organization endorsed them has relatively little impact when you ask 'are you more/less likely to vote for candidate X?'

5) Yes, the Romney campaign is a little pissed it didn't get this endorsement because they swing at every pitch. It was probably someone's JOB to make sure this happened and he worked on it like his life depended on it and he failed. Yeah, it sucks. But in the scheme of things...

6) I'd rather have Sen. DeMint cutting TV ads and lending his machine to me rather than the NRLC (getting to the personal versus faceless organization endorsements). Wouldn't you?

7) I was mistaken about IA RTL. I was thinking of their grasstops. My bad, I was wrong.
