Dramatic new video shows how American soldiers in Afghanistan are being set up for deadly ambushes after trying to make peace with village elders in Taliban-controlled areas.
The effort to win the "hearts and minds" of village elders in the Korengal Valley of Kunar Province in Afghanistan has proved to be a dangerous one for U.S. troops, with elders often suspected of tipping Taliban fighters to the soldiers' schedule and whereabouts.
The video to be broadcast tonight on ABC News' "World News With Charles Gibson" and "Nightline" was shot by "Vanity Fair" contributing editor Sebastian Junger and photographer Tim Hetherington embedded with the 2nd Platoon, Battle (B) company of the 173rd Airborne on a joint assignment for ABC News and "Vanity Fair" magazine.

The so-called rules of engagement must be changed. The ABC video said the Taliban jihadists and sympathizers were putting putting women and children on the rooftops in order to prevent return fire from American troops. In other words, these cowards are hiding behind women and children. There is no way I can think of to circumvent this except to make an example of a village or two by napalming these villages to ashes. The word will soon get out that hiding behind non-combatants will not work. Its a horrible thing to do, but if America is going to win this war we must deal with these primitives on a level they can appreciate. Exactly right - and just maybe they will be changed - see my post #64 - and the news article yesterday about the new assignment - a highly unusual one - that Petraeous has just been assigned =

Were I the commander, I would call the village elders in (and the villages ARE all Taliban, believe it) and say: "Okay, fellas, here's the deal. The next time one bullet comes from one of your villages and/or we find another bunch of ordinance in one of your villages, we will be flying over said village to give you a 30 minute heads up to get out of Dodge. After 30 minutes, said village will cease to exist. (It would only take one bomb.)
In addition, without any warning, the next nest of ambushers get strafed with a gunship.
Betcha it wouldn't take more'n one bomb and one gunship to calm things down but good...

Lol *Very* mature. Smacking you down was too easy. Usually Trolls have enough brains not to brag about being a troll.
No wonder you are the only one in this thread sticking up for the MSM that has been backstabbing our troops nearly 24/7 for years now. Hint: That *should* tell you something.

There does seem to be some misunderstanding about this article. As it reads, the ABC/VF cameramen are embedded with the 2nd Platoon, Battle (B) company of the 173rd Airborne.
Theres no indication that cameramen had any advance warning of the ambushes.
They put the pieces together that they were being set up by the elders. one called to discuss details of a U.S.-financed water pipe project and on the way out, they were ambushed.
As far as I’m concerned these cameramen are not the issue.
The issue is with their bosses who seem to only find incidents to report on of our guys taking heat or try to pin blame on them.
Where is all the coverage of our soldiers on the giving end? Or accomplishing good things?
THAT is the big issue that needs addressing here.

Sorry to bust your sorry as*ed bubble - but if you really read through the thread , you'd see others posts - well thought out ones - that say what I'm saying - here's another heads up - I'm a white-haired old great gramma - been around awhile - first year I could vote, I voted for IKE - been voting straight pubbie ever since - been active on many a state and national campaigns, served as chairman of the anti-ERA in my county, helped lead and win the fight/right to homeschool in my state, had my own uber-conservative pro-family organization, umbrellered with like groups - guest of Eagle Forum Convention in DC, private tour of WH, Ronald Reagan was our guest speaker, served as State rep many times at Convention, served different offices, including President of my county Women's Republican Club and officer - etc etc - became a Bush family fan ever since I had the opportunity to meet and get to know Barbara Bush at a small, private luncheon - Quite a lady.
etc etc
So much for that part - Now for the other - One of the Sky Soldiers in that film happens to be my grandson who lived with me nearly all his life - He's totally dedicated to what they are doing - and totally fed up with the treasonous liberals over here - and guess what? I'll take his word for what's going on over there over opinionated, no nothings over here....
IOW, smoke it

Head in the sand ass kissing is more like it. Probably a holdover from Bush’s previous “can’t we all just get along” mentality.(Hearts and minds)
