You can buy dimmable CFL’s that will work on a conventional incadescent dimmer switch. Even eBay has them. Sylvania’s for 48 of them for $48 and that includes shipping.

The only dimmer I have in my house is for the chandelier in the dining room that takes candelabra base bulbs. I replace the bulbs in there about every four years, so I don’t use it much and it doesn’t use much electricity. The bulbs are the candle flame shape and even if you could bet CFs with that base style they would look grotesque.
