If U.S. lawmakers have their way, the lights may soon go out on Thomas Edison's greatest invention -- the incandescent light bulb. The 19th-century inventor brought illumination to the world's fingertips, but according to Congress, his invention isn't efficient enough for an age anxious about energy supplies.
"Only 10% of the power used by today's incandescent bulbs is emitted as light, while the other 90% is released as heat," Rep. Jane Harman, D-Calif., said when she introduced her legislation to ban standard light bulbs.
To eliminate this waste, Harman has proposed legislation that would effectively eliminate incandescent light bulbs from store shelves nationwide as early as 2012.

Were people FORCED to switch over to automobiles or was it the free market system at work -
Good grief, it's getting scary when people don't know the difference
I remember.
Little by little laws are passed that make the common man a criminal just for living.
You go along or get dead.
250 million and counting

Buy the 4 pack for $7. Consider the light fixtures you will be putting them in because the size is different than a regular bulb. Read the box for the lumen (brightness) output you want. Sylvania, GE, and Phillips are the best rated ones. For where you live you don’t need the cold weather rated ones. When you turn one on, leave it on for 1/2 hour - they last longer that way. Just a few tips for you, I’m not preaching. I’ve been using CFL’s for 10 years. They last about 5 years or so. Technology marches on. There is no ‘Communist Plot’ as others have suggested here. The big 3 light bulb makers have already announced their cessation of making incadescent bulbs, so this proposed law is a mute point.
A few years back, Cree managed to recruit Shuji Nakamura, the inventor of the white, GaN LED, away from Nichia. They’ve been beating Nichia like a drum ever since.
Ahem, the big 3 light bulb makers have already announced they will no longer be making incadescents so this proposed law is useless.
In a matter of 15-20 years, we will begin drink the mercury and phosphors from these things, just as current fluorescents are polluting ground water.
I suppose we can stop eating the mercury laden fish so you can save thirty bucks.
Everything these conzies do has unintended consequences like the crap they made oil companies put in the gas, the current carbon credit frauds and so here we go again.
I've had it with them!
We need to take them to the dump.
BTW, the amortized costs of these bulbs sorta eat into your thirty bucks...as opposed to a two bit light bulb.
Not to mention the fact that the lighting is harsh and yellowish, they also do not give you enough of a natural light. They suck! I got rid of them except for the perimeter lights outside.
If this whack job gets a bill like this through congress I'll eat my shorts.
Why not let the consumer market decide?
Or are you schilling for the nanny state?
One of the big box stores announced a couple of months ago they will not stock incadescents next year. The big 3 bulb makers control most of the market. I do think the proposed legislation is dumb because the availability of regular bulbs will no longer be there. I’m sure you’ll always be able to get them on-line.
You would turn the thermostat to the same setting as always. In theory, the heater would not run quite as much to maintain the same temperature. In practice, you would not be able to tell the diference. But electric (resistance) heat is almost always the most expensive heat you can buy. Natural gas, bottled gas, propane, heating oil, even electric heat pumps are cheaper to use.
I'm sorry. I don't understand what you mean by this.
The stores will sell them as long as their is a demand for them.
Otherwise someone else will get the business.
I think you mean CO. CO2 is carbon dioxide, which is harmless in small concentrations. Our bodies actually produce and exhale it.
CO is carbon monoxide which is colorless, odorless, tasteless and deadly, even at very small levels.
CO results from the incomplete combustion of materials containing carbon. If your home is all electric, you really have no need for a CO detector.
Those of us that keep reptiles, turtle and other such creatures can not use CFL’s as a basking lamp. The idiots.... How will a CFL keep Zack and Mack, my two headed turtle warm and alive? Jeez...
Yes I know it’s from the NYT, but it’s half way decent. Consider this - if you whittle the supply, the demand is controlled. And I agree with you about the mercury ‘contamination’. A decent vacuum with a decent bag is all that’s needed if one breaks. We enjoy our CFL’s in my home.

I doubt she knows what that means. That is a word with many syllables.
Harman can shove it, as Tereza Heinz would say.
We are being forced to switch to the new bulbs for the same reason we had to switch from R-12 to R-22. (Freon for Air-conditioners)
Lies about the climate to cover for someone making a ton of money selling us the ‘new stuff’.
I’m generally very happy with CFL lamps. I have had only one go bad, and that was one that runs 24/7 as a night light. It’s replacement now has about 6000 hours on it. My only complaints are that some of them produce annoying RF interference, and there are clearance problems in some older lamps.
