I can see why someone like you would be wary of a site moderated by the public. If they are as skilled in computer knowledge as you, wikipedia would be doomed.
That said, of course wikipedia isn’t any good for charged subjects. Generally it is just useful as a general knowledge place where you can get a general feel for the situation or as a source of citations (for school essays, for example). It isn’t meant to be the Encyclopedia Britannica on issues that are highly disputed.
Wikipedia is great for getting a deep introductory briefing on any technical subject that might come up, with usually decent links to get more. I often look up things regarding aviation and computer hardware/software with excellent results.
